Blue Devils in the Details 2023

Love the changes made to the closer! I also love the several sections where the guard is all on the same equipment- it is very impactful. The only thing that jumps out every time I watch them is the tuba soli. The last bit is so muddy I can’t make out the melody. That aside, I love this show! -

Troopers sound sooo good! Definitely like a top 12 corps. Did I see this will be their 2nd time to have consecutive finals placements since the 80s? I love this show- it’s really grabbed me from the first, very smoky run. I do hope the guard improves. -

People talk about BD being formulaic, which I guess in many ways they are. But they really know how to create impactful moment after impactful moment. The way the music and guard combine to make so many wow moments is truly a craft that is hard to compete with. They also are always super clean, and have at least a few sections with a crazy hard and near perfect drill move. I agree that a lot of their music is reworked ideas from year to year, but then you get something so special like this years ballad that is so beautiful. I do wish they would retire some of the musical ideas I’ve been hearing the last few years, and some of the other structural elements they seem to rely on, but everything is just done so well, that I’m not sure they are beatable this year. The top 4 groups are so good this year, so however it goes, it makes for great watching! -
What a great performance Phantom! I love how aggressively they play! It’s really a beautiful show. They were a favorite of mine last year, and I think this year is better.

Loved the snare feature, but the horns had some rough moments. Was fun to see nods to classic Cavalier drill moments. I’ve always loved this corps, and wish them the best.

This show really has some meat on it. I think once it’s refined, there will be some very impactful moments. I really love the brass book, and I think the players are sounding great for this time of year. The guard seems to be the weakest element, so hopefully they can get it up to snuff. It’s so exciting to see a corps make big competitive strides, and I think this show and corps could really see success this year. I can’t wait to see it live in SA! -
Just got back to the hotel, and a very few thought from my melted brain. Best season of DCI for me yet. Phantom brought me to tears (this has never happened to me before), and the crowd went wild. I don't understand how this scores below Cavies. AAAAAnd, I honestly thought Boston beat Blue Devils, but I'm pretty sure I'll be proven wrong. I thought there was too much electronic goo for the BD, which Ive never noticed from them before.

DCI Tomball.... I mean, Houston

Just got home from the event. Man was it chaotic. I arrived right as Mandarines began their show, and the line to enter the stadium was stretched around to the back side of the field. Not sure what happened, but Ive never seen a huge delay to enter the stadium through the second performance group. BD- The talent seems next level in this group. Combine that with a really well conceived show, great training, and you have your winner. Guard was amazing. CC- These kids can play. I loooooove the first super fast section after the voice intro ends with the horns marching backwards (super difficult). And I thought the streamers were much more effective in person. Bloo- Love their very creative and beautiful show. I also thought the message is good especially in this angry time in this country. I think the demand in this show drill will hold them back form the very top. But I really enjoyed seeing this in person. And Bloo definitely has a vibe all their own, which I love. Cavies- I unfortunately think this is a down year for them. Im wondering if the design staff is different from the last several shows, because all the entertaining wit is missing. I also thought the staging is very cramped, especially for the guard. Great hornline though. Stars- I like this show much better live. The uniform/ costumes are beautiful in person, and it seems to be a really good year for this group. Excellent soloists, especially the Bari. Cadets- I missed the first part of this show, but they sound amazing, and the show is very entertaining. I love the part where they play to the backfield. Im happy to see this group is returning to form after all they've gone through. Mandarines- completely missed this show, and its one of my favorites of the season. I was just so happy to be sitting in a packed stadium hearing these amazingly accomplished kids play their hearts out. Such a great night!!!- 788 replies

I think Crown is amazing this year. They sound so good and clean. And the music really creates some 'moments'. I predict ill be on my feet a couple times during their live performances I plan to attend. I keep hearing people talking about innovation on here. I think the app thing is definitely innovative though not sure it'll have any lasting impact. The thing that gets me every time is great challenging music and marching with some interesting and dramatic moments, and it seems to me that that is also what gets rewarded by the judges. Seems like the harder/cleaner bar is what wins ( can't tell me the Blue Devils don't include very difficult drill and music into their shows, because I know some of you are thinking this lol). I can't wait to see what happens as the season gets closer to August. Im really not sure who will end up on top, and I don't really care, because I love the competition and all the drama it brings. And honestly Im just so dang happy there is a competitive season this year!!!
