  1. Hey longruns, apparently you need to specify that you want "CORRECT scores." :)
  2. Judges score the corps right after they perform anyway. What does this matter?
  3. Are you sure they played Les Preludes? I remember Southwind doing it a few years back, but I don't think Glassmen ever played it. And I voted for 99. I recall complaints that the music was esoteric, but I thought it was very hummable...
  4. Would we be talking about Madison in the Top 3 this year, or the Top 10? Or making finals?
  5. And I will spearhead the Mike New campaign in 20 years... :)
  6. Is there a story behind it? Is it Marc Sylvesterish?
  7. 01-> Cavaliers 02-> Blue Devils 03-> Cadets 04-> Phantom Regiment 05-> Madison Scouts 06-> Bluecoats 07-> Santa Clara Vanguard 08-> Carolina Crown 09-> Boston Crusaders 10-> Glassmen 11-> Blue Knights 12-> Colts
  8. Sorry for my previous negative post. I hate seeing poor grammar, but even worse is seeing people on a message board criticizing posters' grammar. I am looking forward to seeing the Blue Devils show. How are they paying for the trip to Europe? Are they getting really large appearance fees across the pond? I'm not saying that BD should be ashamed itself for spending so much money or anything. I'm just thinking about the recent post about the money woes with the Crossmen. If BD can afford to go to Europe, then the Crossmen and other struggling corps need to follow the BD model in fundraising, whatever that may be. They're obviously pretty good at it.
  9. Any trillian users know how to do this?
  10. As someone who liked Crown's show immensely, I was somewhat disappointed in the ballad also. It seemed out of place. And, it doesn't make me think "angels" other than the title is "Angel." If I were to pick a ballad called "Angel," I'd pick Fiona Apple's lesser-known tune. But I'm holding on to the hope that a corps will eventually do an all-Fiona show... How would it sound unmic'd? I wasn't a fan of the pit player coming out front with a microphone and breaking it down. I thought that was terribly cheesy. Instead, what about an on-the-field, instrument-by-instrument, acapella drumspeak break, then an entire percussion section jam? I like the Meatloaf tune, and I like the Crossmen closer, but I find little similarity between the two. (I'm not answering your question, but your comment prompted my thought.)
  11. They have a brief statement in their show where the members kick out their legs as though they are going to step, then bring it back. They do this over again several times while repeating the same notes over again each time. I don't remember the section (as they play so many different classical tunes), but maybe it's during the Barber of Seville? I didn't get the "broken record" reference, though it makes sense. I thought they were mocking the drawn-out nature of the endings of some classical tunes...
  12. Is Academy playing Shostakovich's second piano concerto exclusively? I don't see them listed on corpsreps, but I heard some soundclips from their website, and I only hear that concerto...
  13. BD played a popular wind ensemble arrangement of a Gershwin prelude - so they arranged and arrangement of Gershwin... :)
  14. Hey Misterstarsfan, I'm the OU guy heading to Virginia. I didn't know you posted on here, and I definitely didn't know you were the guy with the cool avatar... :) It's good to hear that the Cavies are changing that ending a bit. It was a bit of a let down.
  15. Three of us went to the show from Oklahoma last night: me (a fan for 11 years), a buddy (marched Colts in 96 and 97), and another buddy (never heard of drum corps prior to the Enid, OK, show). Two different perspectives. A few thoughts: - I'm excited to see Troopers in a couple years. Their hornline is pretty weak, but they are MUCH improved from Wichita Falls. I always like their musical selections. - The Southwind drum major is an attractive lady. The Southwind/Broken Arrow uniforms look great. It's tough to imagine they were 13th just a few years ago, but they definitely have an entertaining show with cool drill. I really liked the musical selections from 1999-2002, by the way. And also, the drum major is hot! :) - My non-fan buddy is a big sports guy, so the two of us were trying to give him sports analogies for the corps. I likened Magic to SMU football getting the NCAA death penalty, taking a couple years off, and coming back. But unlike SMU, they came back with Bob Stoops coaching defense, Steve Spurrier on offense, and an all-star staff that pushed them to finals the first two years. Then Magic realized they couldn't afford Stoops and Spurrier and have fallen back to earth a little. Sound okay for you football fans out there? :) - Capital Regiment is great. They definitely deserved to beat Magic soundly last night. Before the show, I thought, "Holsinger... ugh!" But, I thoroughly enjoyed it. - Bluecoats are amazing. Great show. I love the ballad original, but I thought the arrangement was a little suspect. Their show really has everything. My corps buddy said, "Capital Regiment and Bluecoats can now spend the rest of the summer cleaning." - When I originally heard the idea of Cavaliers doing Bond stuff, I was worried. I'm no longer worried. So many effects (but not too many, like last year). My non-fan buddy thought the whistling was awesome. They used amps well, in my opinion. Amps helped with the finger snapping in the opener. I have to disagree with madaboutcorps - I thought the drill was excellent. The closer was disappointing, but perhaps that will change? Apparently one horn player was disappointed with his performance as he got a little sick while exiting the field... :) Two complaints: the small lineup disappointed me (Dallas normally has 8 or 9 corps), and a 35 minute intermission for a 6 corps lineup isn't necessary. One positive (of many positives): great breeze in the Texas heat!
  16. Kdaddy, uncle z hopes you realize that z is old enough to be your Dad!!! Well, I consider my dad to be cool also...
  17. My new favorite DCP personality is Uncle Z. Anyone who talks about himself in the first person is alright with me. Kdaddy thinks Uncle Z is cool...
  18. This is possibly the funniest thing I've ever read... :)
  19. Hey Tom: Great review! I'm sure it was a great experience - one that I'd like to have some day. Maybe I should start volunteering soon before grad school ends, and I actually have to start work...
  20. Hey. I've been thinking about this for a while but never asked about it... Was the jazzy section of Pagliacci (with the baritone, mellophone, and screech soprano) just an arrangement or did part of the original actual sound like that? Or could it have been an arrangement of somebody else's version (similar to this summer's Canon in D being based on another group's interpretation)? The tune we're all familiar with follows that - the much slower (gentler?) version. I would assume the original isn't quite that peppy, but I thought I'd ask... And what was the reaction to it in 1991? Were some folks outraged that Phantom had a park-and-blow? Kash
