  1. Interesting matchup, Cavies 2010 has one of the best drills ever but Regiment 08 was a GE monster and I’ve never seen a show hit like that at finals so Regiment 08 gets my vote I did my monthly pop in on reddit and they are running a thread about Regiment 08 using mics for the “I am Spartacus’ vocals, besides being legal then it kind of missed the point of Spartacus. I wonder when those crazy kids on there will figure it out
  2. Difficult as they are usually one of my favorites, after consulting DCX to figure out the years Top 5 in no order 1985 1987 1991 2004 2007 Hm: 80, 81, 88, 96, 2000 3 least favorite: 2010, 2011, 2014
  3. need to figure out the name and year but my favorite was some early 80s show
  4. So if the CDs don’t have the edits, DCI should upload the videos without any sound (or include the full unedited show on the DVD w/out sound as a bonus) with a countdown watermarked at the start of the show videos to ‘press play on the CD now’ so we can do an at home synch…then do the same for all the corps outside the top 12, maybe even sell a soundless DVD for non-top 12 with a CD as a bundle
  5. I liked the more random prelim order, it was fun. Maybe try it for San Antonio, make it a 2-day event, prelims and finals. Put some of the higher-ranking corps on early at Prelims to get people in the seats. it could add some drama as it’s often the first big meet up of the season…could also see the corps benefit by not having to travel for a day. Could also see the attendance going up on both days as it’d be more trip worthy. Didn’t they do the corps in seeded chunks for finals there anyway?
  6. That doesn’t bug me as much as I would have thought. Until the legacy collection was released, there were a ton of shows that only lived in my memory for decades, it wasn’t a bad place for them. And there is always a way to find or obtain a full version of the show anyway
  7. Tresona are copyright trolls but if not them, then someone else. They had some relationship with providing a streaming marching band service that seemed a bit dodgy when connected with the service they offer but whatever, vertical integration. There are all sorts of rights for all sorts of media and those rights can be pulled after the fact. I believe for Regiment 2008, the composer didn’t like the final product so pulled the rights after the season and for Madison, at some point during the year ESOM sold an exclusive of the rights for 1 year to Allstate for an ad campaign (I wonder if they could go back and secure them now). In the way back past, DCI didn’t worry about rights then I believe they were doing them incorrectly plus the delivery of media have changed more quickly than the laws to protect it which is where we get a lot of ambiguity.
  8. Disappointing but I’ve come to expect it
  9. I didn’t see it personally but I recall the tale being that it did come down to a yelling match between the two of them, search this site, there may be a first hand account of it.
  10. that's a good example of what I meant by " Cadets and the Borg seem to thrive on a victim-complex that results in a siege mentality. " but you got me, yep, I'm being paid to hold a mirror up to the Cadets, their fans and their past. I'm now on the Boston payroll Brasso, about my next check, with the Holidays approaching, I expect a bonus
  11. Generally been sympathetic to liking Boston even when they were annoying Top Shows Wicked Game Red Core of Temptation 1986 (only for their opener Shostis 5th) Animal Farm (Sorry, I like Shosti and I would have loved to see this show clean, before the big watering so acknowledge it’s the idea/design that landed it here, not the performance) Least Favorite, I really disliked their 2001-2008 phase so could be just about any year Colors of the mind, it took me a few years to forgive that show and just when I was… Church of the mind, it was even more annoying than what I considered the worst Planets show ever You’re my Star, it’s like their goal was to win the spirit of Disney award and that’s a bad thing (so did they?)
  12. naw, they're just out of idea so cop to the lowest common denominator or rip off a high school band show (see Mona Shores)
  13. It was finals, which I attended so didn’t catch the ‘live’ show. At the time the Live show featured the last 5 corps’ full show performance. Cadets were in 5th so they would not have made the cut if Madison went last, Blue Devils were in fourth, so they kicked it off. The tradition of previous years’ champion going on last at finals was ended that night because Hoppy was a disrespectful, selfish brat. Somethings never change
  14. I really hope they don’t do this as it would confirm some of my less that flattering thoughts about Hoppy. You may recall the jokes I made about last year’s show tanking because it failed to produce the desired controversy, a bit of truth and all. Cadets and the Borg seem to thrive on a victim-complex that results in a siege mentality. They claim it’s being innovative, I see it as part of the Cadets Cult Brainwashing process and find it off-putting to say the least. It would help explain knowing that they’ll have 4 roving singers even before they have set the show, something that strikes me as another boxed-in, hats-backwards, design failure just waiting to be dumped on the field
  15. I’m guessing you’re talking about Hoppy throwing a fit to steal the traditional, honor of the previous years’ champion going on last at finals? He took that from Madison and all drum corps fans so his 5th place corps wouldn’t get knocked off the TV broadcast. I found it odious and rather telling #timetoretirehoppy
  16. I’ve only ever liked 3 of their shows; 2013, 2015 and 2016 A few I appreciate; 2008 and 2009 But Crown and Cow don’t often connect, 2017, 2014……2004 …..Stormworks…chess pieces…all else
  17. I thought the late announcements and show secrecy last year was way over done and no, it wasn’t always about obtaining copywrites, it was about hype which didn’t work for at least half the corps
  18. I thought 128 was best but was fine with 135. At 150, I’ve noticed a drop in cleanliness come finals, they just never get the shows as spotless as they use to. Also, outside of the top 6, the corps overall quality is diminished – the top corps get all the talent at the expense of the mid-trier corps
  19. 1980, peak Spirit, wow! (1979 was good too but 1980 was the better version) 1985 – Concerto in F, introduced that piece to me, one of my favorite shows that year 2003 – Probably liked the idea and their making finals that year better than the show as I have not gone back to watch that show in years. I will say, I thought the tribute flags were hokey and made me roll my eyes but the rest was cool 2012 – Sin City, there were back again. Fun show, complete package 2013 - Speakeasy, more of their 3 year run of quality, entertainment preformed at a high level Least favorite 2008 and 2009, 2009 had so many issues and missed opportunities
  20. As always, context is everything. If there is a specific effect that is penitent to the design and it works well than cool but as we often see in DCI, these sorts of things become thoughtless compulsories, the design staff checking a box. The use of tarps in DCI has not impressed, the above mentioned Tommy tarps I didn’t enjoy for the same reason as the Cadets Big Apple traps, gratuitous window dressing that became a distraction and added nothing to the show. I ended up waiting and watching for the tarps to do something or mean something and other than Hopkins standing on it, nothing. BK in 2016 was tripping all over their trap, as were Troopers this year so they become another sort of distraction. Bluecoats tarps did nothing for me either. Best use of a tarp was BD 2016 but that wasn’t really a tarp even if it was… it had a point, a purpose that served the theme and an effect Then we get into the entire visual design scoring of rewarding props /tarps created by the staff, another cheap trick
