  1. To be honest, I hate the idea of amped vocals and instruments in the marching art form. That being said, there have been shows that I have absolutely adored that have had these things in them. In other words, I hate the idea of electronics, but if it works for the show, and doesn't take away, then it works for me. If I had a vote, they would be gone, but I don't, so I will grin and bare it until I see the show, if the show still sucks after, then I won't like them in that show. BD 2005, loved the music, hated the dialogue, but that show wouldn't have been clear to everyone without YOWZA, so it worked. If that makes any sense...
  2. You are right, all are entitled to their opinion, I just get sick of the whole notion of people seeing, hearing, or learning something one day and just bashing it or making their remarks for the sake of seeing their writings on a site. Also, I wasn't actually meaning anything about the original poster, it's all of this simplistic theory jibberish which people have spewed all over like 8 pages of text on this site in an attempt to make it look like today's arrangers simply use old and tired progressions. If we really wanted to have a discussion though, I think it would be great for people to analyze entire shows, instead of this portion or that portion, I think people would be pleasantly surprised with the types of writing they would actually find.
  3. I've got an idea...how about all of us pretentious "stop doing it that way" people get gigs working for a corps, get a gig as a brass arranger, get a gig as, dare I say, a MARCHING BAND ARRANGER, and when you do, and your music is being used by a group other than the www.finalemusic.com forums or the Sibelius site where all the geniuses post their wonderful music, then you can make your points about how you know sooo much about theory and chord progressions and people will pay attention. Until then, let's not use our 4th semester theory lecture notes as a way to make ourselves sound like we have a valid point. Oh, and before some tool flames me or makes a remark as though I do not know anything about theory or makes an assumption that I do not arrange for any groups, IM me and I can let you know that I have accomplished these things.
  4. So no rock music in drum corps-is this a blanket statement that you don't like corps that use rock music, or you just don't like the idea of rock music. If we go to corpsreps, you'll find that rock music has been used many times and has worked many times. Not to mention, did you listen to the recording of Kashmir, if you did, does it really sound like a rock tune, or just as the source material. I think the writing of the horn book makes Kashmir it's own vehicle and gives it its own style, but that's just from being at camp and not making assumptions about the show or its music.
  5. That's cool if you saw it in 2002, I am just saying that is for sure at the end of 1992, 1995 and several other early 90's videos.
  6. Watch the end of the shows from 1991-1995, if you have the PBS where they don't cut out right after the show like on the legacy DVD's you can see, but yeah, the Cavies had some snares at the end of 1992 and 1995 in particular that flailed their heads at the end of the shows.
  7. First off, the greatest company front ever in my opinion was the Madison Scout 1997. That being said. I don't think corps use them very often anymore because well...most can't do them. I mean really. Why do most corps march from random blob to a newly developed random blob, because you can hide that lack of marching ability by not marching obvious forms like a company front. As far as them being tired and old, I can't really jump on that argument. That's like high mark time being old and tired. It comes down to whether or not a group can do it. If you can't, you hide from it. I think it's a general lack of ability, and in my opinion, most of the "top 12" would struggle with a company front, so they hide from them.
  8. Or the mod's can do like they have done for many others that have requested and just put an end to it, of course, that would mean they are truly being moderator's then. But I am probably wrong.
  9. MJN-I truly don't think the mod's pay attention to what people talk about on here or wonder about things unless something directly affects them, or is an issue that takes on something they disagree with, otherwise they just let this message board become a pile of vomit that people can keep pushing their opinions about and arguing about.
  10. I am against it. I want that to be known. However, I feel that if a corps is going to use this, it is also their fault if a show suffers because of electronics. I saw a show at BOA this year, yes I am going to talk about BOA for a moment. At finals, their sound system went a little wacky and ruined the show, lost all effectiveness for me, and I had seen it earlier in the season and loved it. So at finals the show was not nearly as strong as it should have been. I think the group suffered in points due to this and that's the thing behind it. If a corps uses these things and they work and the show is better, ok, good for you, if it breaks and fails, its your fault. Look at Cadets 2006. Much like 2005, but with more vocal. People dug 2005, many disliked 2006. Now we can complain and say it wasn't performed as high of a level, but in reality, I think the electronics helped it to not be as strong a show. They made the choice, many didn't like it, some did, but ultimately, I would say it was a mis-step in show design. That being said, again, if groups use it, and it works, yay for them, if it doesn't, get off the soap box, you dropped the ball. Just my take.
  11. Tom..."Scouts former management," what the #### does that mean?
  12. wow...must not be a good question.
  13. I would say Scouts, obviously. I think Crown made some good pick ups as well. How about a thread on corps that have had staff changes that will be negative, oh wait, we have thousands of them, HA
  14. Let's just be proud of one of our own, can't that be good enough for some of us. It is for me! I am sure that Mr. Rondinaro would be proud of anyone that he may not know personally or someone that is associated with drum corps being given an award in their particular field. Let's just be happy for one of our "people."
  15. For me... Scott Stewart, Van Mathews, Bill Zier, Chris Harmon, Matt Gregg, Jon Schipper, and Brian Johnson, to name a few. I would not be anywhere near where I am today without these guys, and I am sure I am leaving tons out!
  16. I know that the likes of Samuel Hazo, John Mackey, Aaron Copland, David Holsinger, Chick Corea, and many others know about corps, lets start a list and see who either can say what composers know about corps or have had some sort of story or contact about it. Sorry if this topic is a repeat.
  17. All of the Cavaliers "original" shows, i.e. "Variations of a quarter over a sustained low brass part that people think is the highest level of brass performacen"
  18. I'm going to continue to encourage people to go to Madison because it will be an experience like no other, and I have been unable to march since Augst of 1999 since we have to have rules in the activity about us old pople.
  19. I marched in from 97-99 and didn't sign a contract. I think it was just enough to give your word as a man, but I guess that's not much anymore
