  1. So does anyone else think that the G7 release was intentionally timed to get lost in the noise of the season? Just using the declining posts on the subject in DCP (everyone's talking about the season!) I wouldn't be surprised if the release was timed perfectly for the G7's needs. And does anyone know the date of the July meeting in Minn.? I understand there is a phone BOD meeting this month; anyone know when?
  2. Not to pick a nit, I'd be willing to bet you a cheap lunch that UW "loses" $10million a year to just fraud and waste. I understand your point, but I sit on three charitable boards of th $10mm size and we'd LOVE to have that kind of slush in our programs. We, and I suspect similarly DCI, have to watch every penny to just gather lunch money. I don't think DCI can get much pickier for the multi-mandate responsibilities that they have. The significant difference, IMO, is that UW has a mandate to be charitable to other charities and, while those charities do lots of good work, their mandate is not to support an activity of music/entertainment for "youngsters". DCI's mandate is much narrower in scope, founded on the premise of helping organically grow the corps community, among it's many other duties to that small niche. This gets back to your point. It's not a good comparison at the outset because of the distinct difference in their respective mandates. And I would suggest UW's mandate includes the weakest charitable organizations getting a significant amount of help based on need, even though the restrictions on "getting in" may be daunting.
  3. And this activity isn't "equal shares" either, Scout. Local show pay $2700 to top 12, $2100 to 13 to 17, $1100 for Open class finals, and $500 for all others. Oh, and this isn't a solely charitable organization in the same way United Way is. UW donors don't expect any sort of entertainment for their contribution dollar. And let's not forget that UW is a multi-billion dollar enterprise where-as DCI is $10million. That dynamic shifts the operating parameters substantially.
  4. Wait, all this talk of pre-show. Is the suspicion that ALL of this is pre-show? I really appreciate the loose-tuned snares, but what is that gawd-awful ringing coming from the pit on the downbeat after they reach center field?
  5. Oh, I GET IT! Smoke up MY butt! Yeah, ha ha. LOL But no. No reason to construe this conversation as smoke. I'm sure, even if you may not be. And that's OK. Just sayin' I been askin' around, that's all... FWIW
  6. 1960's car wash dude. Anyone else think of American Graffiti after seeing this?
  7. You waited until just the perfect time to use that word didn't you? I'm not a soccer fan but I turned on the tube to see what all the hubub was about. Then I spent 20 minutes trying to figure out what was wrong with my darn TV sound.
  8. OK, Stu, keep thinking... I can relate to the symphony example. For instance, the "Age 19 and above" corps (only because most 19 year olds are out of HS) would be akin to that crazy conductor (Dudamel?? sp?) and the Brazilian Youth Orchestra (ie, nationally known and lauded as the best of the amateur ranks), and the "Age 18 and below" corps would be like our Columbus Symphony (excellent players without a huge program and less money). Now, how do you handle touring compatibility between the two? And doesn't this begin to sound like Class A and A60 all over again? Just thinkin....
  9. This is an excellent post! A prime example of creative thinking. I have no idea if it will work, but it's the first time, even with all the "2 league" discussions, that I've seen an actual reason to have 2 leagues.
  10. Thought I'd bump this up with this tidbit... I got second hand (for what that's worth) knowledge today that at least three, and maybe four, BOD of the G7 were mostly unaware of the actual proposal and were taken completely off guard. In fact, some are still in discussion of their position and at least one has a board meeting coming up where they plan to introduce and discuss the subject for the first time. Also, at least one of the directors found out about the proposal via the leak here and made calls to members of his board and to other G7 board members, and got in reply. The suggestion is that several (many) of the new members of DCP are board members following up and trying to get a handle on what exactly was presented via discussion here. Two major implication, IMO: 1. The path to G7 acceptance may be less certain than originally contended in the proposal, and 2. Don't discount the impact of the discussions of many of the G7 threads. Yea, the directors may enjoy our discussion of uni colors and rep, but they're here to get feedback from the most hard-core of the activity fan base. Just sayin'...
  11. Oh, and I haven't seen the uni's yet but, and I guess I'm in the minority here, but I REALLY liked the green. The green drums and bass heads, the green accents on the coat, and especially the on the little green nymph guard member who conducted. Yep, loved that green.
  12. Plan9, I've been following your discussion with Stu and I want you to know how appreciative I am that you decided to share some of your personal side. I think understanding a viewpoint starts by putting oneself in the other's shoes and, to do that, one needs to know how big those shoes are and what color they are. Yes, you can be gruff (can't we all be?). Yes, your opinions don't match mine in all ways. But I'm glad to get to know you here. I think it be fitting for all contributors to give such insight so the rest of us know the perspective of those with whom we interact. Thanks, from me anyway.
  13. Good God, that was a beautiful paragraph. It should be read at the July meeting. I suspect some heads would bow among the G7. But then, maybe not. Excellent post, Brasso.
  14. This thread is why I have the Legacy collection and a fabulous sound system. So many shows I'd forgotten about and so much fun to listen again, and this time to listen for loud only. Unfortunately, 2 of my 4 amps are back at the factory being tuned and my system will be down until fall. But I'm writing all this stuff down and can at least watch them on the PC while I wait! Oh, and SOA, no question. Nothing ever since has even come close, IMO. That night in Birm I began wearing my hair parted down the middle.
  15. Oh please, STOP being an apologist, eh? He could have called them the seven dwarfs, or the seven deadly sins, or the seven days of the week, for God's sake. No, HE chose to reflect the 20 most-important government officials that set global policy! Don't you see the parallel to self-importance? Of COURSE it stuck - it references their view of themselves! Geesh. Alright, I give. I made it all up.
  16. Now THIS is a guard uniform! (From the Sin City Regiment FB page):
  17. Can I be in line to insert my dollar into a female guard member's halter?
  18. Yes it was, unlike many aspects of their proposal. Hop addressed it in his blog post and my post above iterates what he said. He envisions the G7 as having the significance of the G20.
