  1. Mini Corps in the afternoon and bleeding ears in the evening. :P Wonder if I have practice the next day to make it complete. WHAT!!! B)
  2. Not surprising to me and it's gotten worse over the decades. Still have two syndicated comic strips that ran in the mid 70s that used Drum Corps in the punch line. Doubt if that will ever happend again. :( And at lunchtime I found out the hard way that collegehumor is blocked by at work. Oooops
  3. I'd rather use a baseball bat in a soccer game. ^0^ That French guy ain't gonna head butt me in the World Cup. :sshh: Edit: Thanks piosop06, couldn't find it in the smilie drop down menu.
  4. While back I bought CD format of the years I was in DCA. Cheap buy as I was only on the album 76-79. Sold the old albums as-is on eBay and 1977 DCA went to a former Chicago Connection member. b**bs Hmmm, we got our first bells in 1976. 5th in Horn Ex??? Time to relisten to that year.
  5. Also read when the Bb crap storm started that it would be cheaper for start up corps to buy (Bb) horns. Or members of those corps could bring their own horns. (Except for ex-trombone players like me ). And if I wanted the experience of playing in a Brass Band or Bagpipe group would adding new voices change that experience? Saxs in a Bagpipe group???? Vibraphone in a Brass Band???? <**> :angry2: (What happened to the pukin' ampsuck smilie?)
  6. Thanks, wondered what the Texas corps travel time was. Bused from PA/MD border to New Orleans in the late 70s and it took not quite 24 hours with two meal stops. Don't remember much of the trip on the way back as I hit 21 a few weeks before and we won.
  7. 1977 was one of the "Big Change" years in Senior corps: Sunrisers won their first championships when they knocked off the Cabs. Sun won again in 1978 proving that it wasn't a fluke and they were a force to be reckoned with for many years. One of the original members of DCA the Baltimore Yankee Rebels lost their sponsorship, changed their name to Southwind at DCA and missed DCA membership by a wide mark. The corps competed under the Yankee Rebel name during 1977 so they could be in DCA sponsored shows but it was not the same corps from before. On a lesser note Rochester Phoenix disappeared after an amazing 2 year run. French Canadian corps returned to DCA that year. Name changed every other year or so but there was a "Frenchie" corps at Finals for many years. The 11th and 12th place corps were from the MidWest with MBI and Chicago Connection. First (?) time two non-Northeast or Canadian corps were at DCA. Oh yeah, some corps named Westshoremen made their first Finals appearance in almost ten years.
  8. Thanks for the reminder. Year or so ago I had problems ordering some Wateska CDs (PC problem on my end) and called the DCW office to order. To my surprise Steve answered the phone and we talked corps for a while. Steve told me that besides audio, DCW is working on getting video of older shows that are not availible to the general public. Now last year a set of 1960s show DVDs came up for sale. Glad to see the video portion is also working out. Better check the DCW Historic CD section again, it's been a while. :)
  9. Flutes, piccolos and clarinets blowing down the house.... <considering> Nope, can't picture it. Then again I march in front of or with the Contras so my hearing is not 100% anyway. :P
  10. Sheppard and Myers is still standing Harold Bair AL Post #14 still standing and corps practices where the parties were probably held. Never made any of them but was underage during the Westshoremen/Lancer RCA rivalry years anyway. :( First Lancer practice for 2007 is Sunday at the Post. Tom, I had a problem sending the pic. PM me with your email addie please.
  11. Dang, I'm agreeing with someone I competed against. :P Part of the thrill of playing P/R horns was getting sweet sounds out of what was really a converted Army "signaling device" (aka bugle). Best line I heard about it was: Almost anyone can play a MB instrument. But you really have pay attention to tame these DC beasts. And danielray, does that WW case have "Kindling" written on top. ^0^
  12. That was me and thanks for the detailed response. One other difference I'd add is a guess that Corps members seems more aware of their corps history than MB members. For reference there have been posts on Crossmen Alumni showing up at camps to tell the new members about Crossmen history and tradition. Or ask any member if their corps won a Championship and what years. Then ask the same thing of a MB member.
  13. OK I don't know about amped brass either. If true then the main (only?) change I see is "electronic drum machine". Not trying to make this a pro/anti amp discussion either. Just trying to figure out what GH is trying to change with this proposal.
  14. Better re-read it as it says nothing about not allowing amped brass. Proposal only disallows wind instruments if they are illegal for DCI use. Current horns are legal so possible opening to allow amped brass. Also states not limited to "keyboards and electronic drum machines". At least that's my take on the legal-ese.
  15. Oh I think I know your feelings Mike :P and sure you know we don't flame each other. Question was intended for jetman1287.
  16. I have a serious question, IOW not flaming you: Is the amount of time and effort members put in the only difference you see between Drum Corps and Marching Bands?
  17. Changes to corps instruments that make them more like MB I can see. But adding a new section of instruments (in this case WWs) is (IMO again) different. Or to go back to my usual bagpipe band comparison: Bagpipes and drums have been modified over the years with plastic drum heads, plastic pipes, etc. But adding a new type of instrument has not been done.
  18. Yes Drum Corps has changed over the decades. But up until the addition of amps these changes have been modifying horns, percussion and guard work. Nothing has been added to the horn/drum/guard mix until amps. Sorry Mike, to say that adding WW is related to the changes over the decades (IMO) doesn't fit.
  19. Thanks Joe, I have to keep reminding myself that there were two different groups called the Interstatesmen. And I discovered corps in 1973, well after I-men (I) had left the scene. And thanks for the pin info. I was wondering if it was from the new corps or maybe a leftover from the original I-men. Have a feeling the pin was the only thing the corps had for sale as I probably would have bought other stuff if the corps had it up.
  20. Congrats, this was the last thing I scanned before either the scanner or something in the PC went kaput. Guessing the PC since it's old, slow and knows it'll will be replaced by next month. Or next week if I get my way. ^0^
  21. Growing too fast to read it all. If age is the concern has anyone mentioned All Age or Alumni corps? Edit: After re-reading it appears you will only accept being with a top corps as only Boston and Cadets are mentioned. Care to explain if this is true and if so why.
  22. Heh and I was being a bit of a stinker <$1 to Bugs Bunny> when I asked. I've just seen too many posts where people claim corps is the experience and never give credit to the unique brass/percussion sound. DrumcorpsFan27 and dbc03s posts about this pretty much match what has been discussed. Only difference is they had a civil discussion. For the record, to me DC is a combo of the unique sound and experience. But then again I played piston/rotor so part of my experience was people asking "What the #### is that?" at parades and other non-DC settings. So the instrument I was playing made me different from the MB world.
  23. Never did Mike, just getting opinions on which one is harder. s/ Some guy who is very uncreative unless he's writing computer programs or scripts.
  24. Good many of the proposed rule changes over the last few years have to do with designing the show. For example adding instrumentation was justified because the designers were "stifiled"(sp) in what they could do. And going to 150 members will open up drill and music design possibilities. So two related questions: Is show design one of the major reasons for the changes to DCI in the last few years? Should show design drive major changes to DCI? As for the "Harder to Design" question. Is it more creative to design a show when you have a broad selection of things to work with (amps, vocals, electronics). Or is it more creative to design within a stricter set of rules (no amps, etc). Heard discussion both ways so will open the floor here.
