Small enough it really wasn't noticed from the stands. Didn't even know about it until I read about it after SCA was no more. (Needed DCP back then so I wouldn't miss anything). Also thinking about "corporate Drum Corps" that have existed over the years and were they used as advertising???? Answer not really.... Hershey Chocolatiers - played the Hersheys jingle one year Commonwealth Edison Knights of Light (Chicago Electric Company corps) - played "Light" themed songs (can't remember any right now) but unis looked like Canadian Mounties Ballentine Brewers - can't see any company logos (3 rings for us old pharts) and their 1964 show is just like other corps except for a great concert number (have he recording on CD) Commonwealth Edison (NYC corps) - no idea but their late 1940s show I have has no Electric company themes that I can tell. Hamms/Schmidts Indians (beer companies) - great Native American unis and that's all I know Grain Belt (beer) Diamonds - :P no friggin' idea but it later became Minnesota Brass Inc

I was unlucky enough to have to wait until I was almost 17 to see my first corps. :( Weird part was I saw my first corps 7 months after I first joined one. Our school district had to do the flutophones sometime before 4th grade as that when the company selling band instruments showed up :) :) :) :) . Still remember my first trombone cost $150 in 1966 dollars which worked out to $7 a month. Next year the slushpumps went up to $159 and $8 a month *gasp*. And jwillis, think I remember reading the fifes were phased out of drum, fife and bugle corps when bugles started getting enough valves to make recognizible (or melodic) music.

Piston/Rotor horns can make dogs in the next county howl???? Nevermind.... having a flashback..... PS - Cavaliers copied Sheherazade from Archer Epler. ^0^ Archie just didn't frame or spin it. :P

Ditto... Actually walked away from all DC from 1992-2003 (except for DCA albums). Got so bored I walked out in the middle of a corps performance and drove home.

Thought they were sponsored by Ballentines? Have a pic of them in front of the brewery. Steel City Ambassadors had Wendys patchs on their unis in the 1980s or 1990s.

Got the idea from (yet another) Last Straw thread on DCI. The scene is this: Div I does something that makes you decide you will not/cannot follow them anymore. But Div II/III does not make the same change as Div I for "whatever" reasons. If Div II/III is still doing Drum Corps in a way you can support..... Will you support or follow them? For those of you already Div II/III supporters, will you follow/support Div II/III more.

LMAO, anyone else old enough to remember those Gad awful recorder (cheap ### plastic flutes) classes that were pushed on 1st or 2nd graders in the 1960s? :sshh: Think they stopped them in our School District because the #### things were passed down for about 50 years and looked filthy as Hades.

Any good place to find info on this Jonathan? The History of DC has a few passing references but the fifes seemed to have been phased out before the start of WWII. That is except for a late 1940s reference to a show or recording of Our Lady of Grace fife, drum and bugle corps. Can't remember if I saw the corps listed in preserveourcorpsmemories.com or Dicemans srcorps.com many lists of scores. And my home PC has a problem with pdf files so I can't look at the POCM list of recordings. History of DC also has a great pic of a 1930s AL Post Senior corps carrying megaphones during a parade. The megaphones were used when the corps did some singing. ^0^

Translation: Sprint cars run on dirt track which kick up a ####load of dust. "If there ain't dirt in your beer it ain't real racing" is heard a good bit. B)

Westshoremen 1976 - Opening solo and 1976/1977 - Quejada(sp?) solos all done by HS'ers. Of course HS'ers were half the corps those years.

DCI paid the $$$ and that's what made ESPN2 decide to air the telecast on slightly later than Prime Time on the East Coast. When I see ESPN go after DCI, instead of the other way around, then DCI fnas shoudl boast. As far as ratings for other "junk sports" mentioned earlier. I remember when ESPN showed a crap load of Australian rules football in the early 80s. Had nothing to do with ratings and everything to do with putting on "something" 24/7 without breaking the bank.

:P Looks like instead of vacation time to go to Rochester, I'll have to take time off to watch all the DVDs when they show up. (And listen to all the CDs to make sure they're OK :P ). Thanks for the info Ron, will miss not seeing you and other folks.

As a retirement (still about 10 years off) project I'd like to check out the places that used to sponsor Drum Corps. This would be American Legion, VFW, churchs, etc. I'd like to see what percentage of sponsors still exist and if they do still exist see how far downhill they have fallen (especially in the cities). IMO, that has been the reason for decline in a lot of smaller corps in the past. Speaking of the present, looks like starting a smaller Jr corps is a fools errand as they appear to be getting the shaft from DCI in terms of publicity.

Does that mean the camera never moves or zooms in the whole show? Kinda like the idea but wondering if that would get boring after the 20th corps or so. Hmm, looked at your webpage and appears you went from the West Shore to the East Shore.... Wonder if I can trust you :P (I moved the other way across the river.) Thanks for all the feedback folks, I've decided to stay home <**> :( so DVDs will be my way to see almost everyone for the first time. (Only made the Harrisburg show)

Whole discussion reminds me of the old saying that only fellow artists can understand really good art and everything else is for the "unwashed masses". Problem here is there aren't enough corps around to have shows for both groups. :(

Beat me to it Liz and I'm older than you are. :( My younger (by 9 years) sister was starting college when Poison hit the national scene. My folks didn't have cable at the time because they lived in the boonies. One night sis and her boyfriend stopped by to watch MTV at my place and check out "Talk Dirty to Me". Kicker was when sis asked the boyfriend "Now which guy did your sister used to date until your dumb ### parents broke it up?" ^0^

Oh you just can't wait for that reunion tour to hit Hershey can you. :P Gad I worked with Brett Michaels dad just before he retired and didn't realize it 'cause Brett dropped his last name. Heard someone make a smart remark about seeing his kid on MTV and it finally hit me.

Remembering when most of the crowd in the 1970s couldn't read a note of music and wasn't related to someone in a corps. Today it's DC people playing to other DC people and their families and friends.

Sayre has been there, he gets it :) My last place year brought a corps back from the inactive ranks. :) And it also gave Sayre a corps to march in 98-02. THAT'S what made it all worth while. B)

Doesn't it suck having to use fingers on the valves. :P Last month we were talking about piston/rotors and I flipped out one of the younger people by saying: "OK valve 1 is right thumb, valve 2 is left thumb, what the #### thumb is valve 3 supposed to be?" ^0^ Welcome and will be looking for you at next years Apple Blossom Parade in Winchester.

Lot of people have the mind set of "If you're not going to win or get a lot of credit, then #### it, it ain't worth it". And God forbid if you disagree, then YOU must be wrong....... Mmmm..
