  1. During Star of Indiana, someone yells, "92 Champions!" At the beginning of the Cavaliers' second tune, someone else yells, "92 Champions!" and the original voice yells, "F*** you!"
  2. Now that the 2010 season is over, it's time to make your predictions for 2011. Let's see 'em!
  3. While the unit itself is non-deployable, many of the members of the Marine D&B have been deployed, including my old roommate who was in the first Gulf War.
  4. Somewhere Over the Rainbow is one of the Cavaliers' songs. The corps song is actually set to the Coast Guard Hymn, which you will hear in the medley that they play of both songs.
  5. How does facing different competition affect YOUR score? That makes little to no sense at all. This isn't football.
  6. That's Seguin, TX, pronounced saGEEN, named after a colonel in Sam Houston's army, not sequin. Poteet is 20 miles south of San Antonio.
  7. Considering that Blue Stars came in 2nd in the very first DCI Finals in 1972, I would say that they probably belong on that list. Not to say that EVERY corps competed in DCI Championships that year- only 13 did- but still, that's gotta mean Blue Stars were up there.
  8. http://www.drumcorpsplanet.com/forums/inde...howtopic=116782 You might want to try DCI reviews since we performed at a DCI show...
  9. OK, I didn't say that allllll tuba parts are written for different keys of tubas. For the most part, it's all written in one key and one has to transpose. I have, however, seen parts written for other keys, again, mostly in orchestral tuba parts.
  10. My answer to your question would be to ask whoever arranged the music. Most of you seem to have no idea what you're talking about. Tuba parts are written for all sorts of different keys, mainly Bflat here in the US, but orchestral parts are often written for CC tuba. Some band arrangements have parts for both. I've always played treble while playing a G bugle. Some guys that came into the Marines were confused because they read bass clef in their corps so we'd have to write in the fingerings for them. Again, my answer to your question about whether the music is already transposed or not is to ask the arranger.
  11. That would have been "Semper Fidelis March," the official march of the Marine Corps. I've played it more times than I can count.
  12. When I first got to the Marine D&B, we had Degs with the slip slide that we used for A-flats (treble clef). Nothing like the "PANK" when those slides went back in. If we had a passage with a lot of A-flats, we'd pull it out and finger the whole section a half-step up. When we got new 2-valve Kanstuls, they instead added a rotor that takes the horn down a half-step, basically an extra second valve. If you ever get to see them in person, go take a look.
  13. The first time I heard Star booed was at the Preview of Champions in '92 in Tennessee.
  14. Yes, as has been stated, the Cavies and Scouts both use the men and women's facilities. There was a set time for our female volunteers to shower when we weren't allowed in the women's facilities. If a woman needed to use the restroom at any other time, they had someone stand guard so no guys came in. I do remember one year at Phantom's home show when Scouts, Cavies, and Phantom shared housing. Imagine two all-male corps and the guys from Phantom having to share one locker room. It was quite crazy. There was another time in Indiana when we had to go into the locker rooms because of a tornado warning. A couple of guys in the women's locker room decided to hit the showers and wash off the dirt we were all covered with from a windy day. All of a sudden, a couple of volleyball players came in. The guys were scrambling for their towels.
  15. I have a feeling that if you are reading about junior corps being a stepping stone, it was more like a cadet-type corps, like the Blue Devils "B" and "C" of today. A lot of the corps had a cadet corps. So, "junior" and "senior" corps isn't necessarily referring to DCI and DCA.
  16. Most of the guys did not go for the vegetarian lasagna. Those were big days for PB&J. As for weight gain/loss, I was super skinny anyway and would gain 5 pounds every summer from carrying around that contra.
  17. The Cavalier Corps Song is set to the tune of the Coast Guard song. I always loved it in the Marines when we played "Armed Forces Melody" and got to the Coast Guard Song because I would remember the words to the corps song.
  18. He may have meant the Caballeros, though they are better known as the Cabs. "The United States Marine Drum and Bugle Band" "The United States Drum and Bugle Corps" "The United States Marine Silent Drum and Bugle Corps"
  19. Wow, man, take a chill pill. You actually contributed to the marching band fee thread, but you're gonna flip out now?
  20. Looks like the two closest to you are Fredericksburg, VA and Washington, DC, both about an hour and a half away. Something to keep in mind for next year. I did Tuba Christmas in Austin yesterday on the steps of the state capitol with 162 others. Hadn't done Tuba Christmas since 2001 because it can be boring. I have participated in 12 since my first in 1985- in Houston, Dallas, Austin, Chicago, Baltimore, Washington, DC and Newport News, VA. I don't remember what year it was, but I was at the rehearsal in DC and was wearing my Texas Lutheran College sweatshirt. This guy sitting next to me says, "Remind me where that is." We start talking and he says that his wife is a dean at A&M, I ask which college, and he says Education. Hey, my dad is Dean of Education at the University of Houston I tell him. He asks what my father's name is, I tell him, and he looks at me and says, "David??" Turns out he was an old friend of the family and hadn't seen me since I was a small boy. How wild is that??
  21. That's how a lot of people get to camp! You're going to be spending the weekend with a bunch of strangers anyway. I can assure you that most people wouldn't mind having someone ride with them, especially if you chip in for gas. If you don't want to individually message people, post something and let people contact you. If you want to get there, you'll get yourself there. Heck, there's even the bus, but that's gonna take a lot longer than just riding with someone.
  22. If you're in St Petersburg, it's 4 hours to Carolina Crown and 5 hours to Jersey Surf. You should consider flying or carpooling. For that matter, how are your parents going to handle you being gone for the entire summer?
