  1. Speaking of drummers and staff changes, I like what I am seeing from Spirit. I may very well hang around a camp or two this coming season.
  2. But I say "drummer" just to #### off my fellow drummers...percussionists...#### it...whatever
  3. I would tend to agree. And let's face it....DCA corps were never intended to compete with DCI corps on DCI sheets. I do, however, think that an all age division in cooperation with both associations would be something to look at. Both could potentially benefit.
  4. I would agree that it has to be a mix. Something like what is being described here is just another tool in the box. You still have to have the foundation in place and then things like this to make it more appealing and fun to the target audience.
  5. Because you posted this BigW, I have to share what I have as my ID card at work.
  6. I'm sure there are app developers on this site right now who would do it in their spare time.
  7. Would DCI allow use of the app? I don't know that any of us here would know. It would be interesting for certain.
  8. I don't think Buccs or CV would ever go to Open class. I think both organizations understand that being 1st or 2nd place in DCA garners more attention than being 14th (or wherever they would fall) in Open Class. I could be wrong, but it just seems like something they wouldn't do. Would they compete in an Open / All Age hybrid where DCA and DCI join forces...I don't see why not if the conditions are right. It's going to take a lot of stroking of ego's to make that happen I suspect.
  9. That's why I would like to see a more solid connection between DCA and DCI. DCI has already begun some of the things mentioned here. DCA could get well ahead of their own typical learning curve by taking notice. That being said, it also requires an administrative staff which DCA does not appear to have (at least in a full time capacity.) You're 100% correct...start somewhere. There are some really bright minds in DCA and DCI. Yoke their strength, I think at times, associations like DCI and DCA are afraid to give up some control to entities outside of their internal group. There is plenty of technology out there, plenty of avenues for outreach and I would suspect PLENTY of volunteer hours. Drum Corps folks are a passionate group. At the same time, not every corps is very good at communicating with their alumni and fan base. DCA could help that by creating a volunteer network. The circuit isn't approachable (from an outside view at least,) because there is not a large presence of DCA corps at non-DCA events that I am aware of. We have bands which participate in local band circuits here in the south but I do not see CV at those shows representing our activity. The last I saw anything was maybe the GMEA in 2012. CV did do some outreach this year with SOA at one of the Spirit camps. That's not a knock on CV by any means....simply an observation. I would be surprised if outreach in other areas is much different. The other thing I think would increase outreach would SOME sort of agreement with DCA to offer discounted ticketing for large groups at shows (and it should be a significant discount,) and with Box5 or whomever does the broadcast for a particular year to offer free streaming for band directors. It costs almost nothing and could potentially have a huge impact on viewership. Band directors are NOT going to step out of their comfort zones without getting something in return and let's face facts that everyone likes "free." Outreach was different in the 80's. We had corps instructors come to our school and talk to us about drum corps. They helped out at camps for little or no money in order to help draw talent to the corps. Volunteerism is free advertising.
  10. I can see your points. It makes we wonder then, if the reason why DCA corps have not voted to move the finals date is because a good solution has not been presented to sway them. We've all been in business. The rule of thumb is always (for right or wrong,) that things will be done the way they're done until someome comes up with a better way to do them. Problems are easy to find....solutions not so much. And doing something is always better than doing nothing.
  11. Same. Though if you want stupid, I would highly recommend the movie "Rubber" who's basic premise is that the soul of a serial killer transfers to a tire. The now sentient tire rolls around and kills people. Much of the film is from the tires point of view. Dumb like that is sometimes like lightning in a bottle 😆
  12. Hey Jim, Billy Zane just called and asked that we don't ever mention that movie again. He's afraid that it's like Bloody Mary and if we mention it 3 times, Paramount will want to create a sequel.
  13. I tried to find the show again on all media I could think to search so I could let Britt watch it. I finally was able to find it on Amazon. When I attempted to play it, it basically said "This content is unavailable because no one gave two ####'s about this series."
  14. We could do a show based on the fact that drummers are insane. However it could only appear in Comedy Central or some other network without the stringent rules of standard network television. I remember very distinctly with one season I marched, the "Half as### run through." Which was then followed by the OTHER "Half as### run through." Gotta keep that tan even after all. I don't think that network TV would truly understand the "uniqueness" of drum corps members. LOL
  15. That's the show I was looking at as well. I really do think that there is SOMETHING there. Logistics can be a real PITA but that's a never ending cycle anyway.
  16. I have seen the commercial multiple times and never really noticed. Plus, it's 30 seconds long. The movie Drumline was 1:58 long and was even more awful in regards to accuracy.
  17. There are a minimum of 6 DCI shows within 2 hours of CV. There are 2 DCA shows and if I remember correctly, CV hosts them both in some capacity. I'll take 6 scores, thank you. I've been saying it for years as well as many of you here have been saying it.
  18. Threatening to the other corps or to DCA itself? It's so hard to actually draw that line at times for me.
  19. I remember that thread as well and it wasn't all that long ago. Terri will certainly know more. At least on the surface, that would be a fair statement to consider. Not knowing any specifics, it's hard to come to any other conclusion. What I don't want to see happen is that DCA (whomever that may be in charge,) treats the Association how Roman treated Pioneer. I don't want to see an activity driven into the ground because it's someones "baby" and if they can't manage it then let it all burn. I am, however, smart enough to admit that I don't know what I don't know. There could be a lot of things going on that would shift my perception. Jim Cook from Star said something once along the lines that you had to know where your strengths are. If you aren't capable of managing the position you're in, have the common sense to put someone in that position who can be successful. Delegate the responsibility to those who can make things happen and believe in the product. I'm not worried about a Buccs dynasty. At this point, it will mean nothing if there isn't a DCA for them to be champions of.
  20. Valid. But if you push DCA up one week (the week after DCI Finals,) you're only losing a week of rehersal. We've all been there. It's complicated but not something that should be dismissed out of hand IMHO. If the corps aren't all in, then yes that's an issue. My feeling though, is a little better situation for all corps might help stem any wavering.
