Do scores START too low?
shaners replied to How_Will_It_End?'s topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
At the original poster: I used to ponder the same exact question. The way I now view scores is as a living spread between corps that evolves throughout the season. I am of the opinion that a larger score spread would allow for a more organic growth through the season. When I first started dealing with scores in the marching activities I tried compartmentalizing everything. I tried assigning abstract point values to specific elements of design and levels of execution. The problem with this way of thinking is that it implies that the content scores never change (which is far from true). Similarly, comparing the finals week score of 13th place corps X to the early/mid season score of the Blue Devils is comparing apples to oranges. The content is totally different, and one show will always have more effect, regardless of the score or when it was given. Like I already said, a larger score spread would feel more natural in this regard. In the end, who cares, right? The score is just an extrinsic motivator for corps to base their progress. In 10 years when I pop out my 2014 DVD, I'm going to watch the shows that I enjoyed, regardless of the score it was given. -
Agreed. Saw their stand still encore in So. Cal and was blown away by the battery and the improvement in writing.

Didn't even realize this was happening, even when seeing them live. thanks

Glendora Show--Isn't It Happening Right Now?

It's hard to believe that this is only WEEK ONE of performances! Corps are so good, so early. About BD, I definitely need a few more takes to figure out what's happening in this show. Call me a simpleton, but I just didn't get it.- 61 replies

Riverside Rigadoon 2014 Edition - Wheelock Stadium

one other thing I wanted to mention, the blue devils had a drone above the field recording the performance! I'd really like to see that footage. Please post if you see it. -

I think there is an unwritten rule where this show must always be at RCC. jk, in reality, the show is hosted by the RCC Marching Tigers, whom are well known in so. cal. for putting on traditional, super fun field shows during the fall. (think 90's style cool music + cool drill = cool show). I heard more rumors tonight that there are plans to rebuild the stadium stands, but take that with a grain of salt cause those rumors have been going around for almost 2 decades now :P Despite the less than ideal stadium, the RCC show always feels like the RCC show, and I think the drum corps community in so. cal. appreciates that. -

As a staff member, it would be inappropriate for me to share my opinions here on DCP. Although, I do enjoy reading the conversations and keeping the pulse of the drum corps community. -

At the show, word on the street is that it's sold out, except for the small ground level bleachers. But it's RCC, you could always park your bum on the large stair case behind the stadium. -

ya, i see what you mean. even if they had a top 6 caliber show design, I don't think they have the maturity/talent to pull it off. I'm very happy with their production. like you said, it seems to be written for just the right talent level for their members. 9th place seems to be a legitimate goal for bones this year. -

I figure it's something along those lines. While I have not seen Bones live, I tend to disagree with the visual complexity. This is the most complex visual package Crossmen has had in over decade (imo). I think he's referring to the general effect complexity.... i.e. bones show is very straight forward when comparing it to recent big-boy productions -

If you like it, you like it. If you don't, you don't. -
I'm calm. I was just surprised that certain 'always positive' person agreed with a very critical post. I just watched the video and feel fairly optimistic. Possibly the best design they've had since moving to Texas.

Dang xbones... For you to agree with seen-it-all's statement makes me very worried.
