  1. '76 BD Mello soloist!!!!!!!! I think it's Jim Ott's sister, right? Flippin' AWESOME! '75 Scouts Metzger!!! Enough said! '83-'84 Garfield BARB MARONEY!!!!! SOLID AND BEAUTIFUL TONE! '84-'85 Madison sop soloist (Morgan). Quite possibly the highest notes played in a drum corps show! '87 Star Mello Jeff Freelin did a very nice job. '88 Star Sop soloist Barry Hudson! '88 Scouts Mello solo, I love that solo man! '92 Star (Amber Waves) mello solo Josh Talbott!! And I believe Matt Harloff was the Sop Solo! Beautiful!! '93 Star Once again Josh and company at the beginning of the show. '86 BD who is the bearded sop soloist that plays several solos in the show? He's freakin' awesome! '88 BD sop solos!!! '89 BD.... I don't care how much bad rep that guy gets on here or anywhere else, I heard him play that solo several times in '89 and he was always NAILS!! He was a great soprano soloist!! He just was off on the wrong night. He was a PIG!! Ok, enough for now.
  2. Good Luck Kiddo! You'll have a great time, I'm sure! And the brass technique that you'll learn there will be exceptional! Enjoy every moment of your Drum Corps career. In retrospect, the time you spend working in corps seems long and difficult, but it is fleeting and it will change your life forever!
  3. What about? Music - Jim Prime Brass- Donnie Van Doren
  4. The Rainbow wasn't burned. I saw it a couple of years ago! It is in Northwest Arkansas at a High School. The band director that was at this school, at the time, was on staff with Sky Ryders. I went to interview for a job there and saw the Rainbow in the band room. I said "cool rainbow, it reminds me of the one that SkyRyders had." He said, "because that IS the Rainbow that was SkyRyders!! I loved the '86 show! Also, Brady Massey, Sky Ryders DM, is a good friend of mine. He is teaching band at Pocahontas High School in Norteast Arkansas. And doing a very fine job!!
  5. Yeah..... Thanks for bringing up such a found memory of the love shared that night for Star. <**>
  6. Yeah, you too can lease the building for a mere $3,000.00 a month! Very sad day for many alumni that went through those halls and sweat on those fields. Don't be surprised if eventually Thomas L. Brown elementary school is sold, flattened and made into a housing project. I'm glad that I got a picture of the sign back in June before they painted over that piece of DCI history! As for the coach leasing company, that is no longer owned by Cook Group. It was sold the day after the Star alumni had the parade and Gala back in May of '04. It is now called Star of America leasing. Man I wish I had a ton of money lying around....
  7. Uhhhh.. MB3 is already back! It's called Memphis Sound now. Trey Moore, the director, was a member of MB3. Oh here are my picks.... Suncoast Sound Muchachos Skyryders Delta Brigade(short lived Arkansas corps) STAR of Indiana!
  8. Hey Brent! That's great dude! I didn't know that you'd moved from Nashville. Good luck with this new venture! BREATHE DAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!
  9. I thought since the kid is trying out for Crown that I'd give some advice on what Matt Harloff will probably tell the auditionees. If it were any other corps except maybe this coming years Bluestars, I wouldn't have said anything because I don't have insight as to what brass approach they'd be using. A tongue release is for sure NOT the way to release a note. I don't believe releasing a note with a SMALL breath will destroy the resonance, if anything it will help the note be open and reverberate more. My opinion.
  10. For sure practice Breathe Dah!!! With a nice relaxed breathing passage,"POH" breath. Practice marking time and doing a 9 count breathe through the horn. Long tones!! Think warm dark air! Breath in time with your feet. Take a small breath at the end of the note to get a nice open ended release. Just a few pointers to get you started. Hope this helps a little bit.
  11. HeHe.... Yeah I'd like to see finals in KC again!
  12. Star '89 and Star Alumni '04 (for the Indy 500 parade) Henry V. :)
  13. Skyriders did a Black/ White uniform that didn't mix until the end of the show in the late '80's. The West Side Story Show.
  14. UUUUUhhhhggggggg......... I'm speechless..... I'm starting to dislike this thread! THX3838, do you march in any corps? If you do, I'm sure it's a very nice corps! (As I turn and walk away from the computer)
  15. If you are a Star fan, then the Star Anthology is a must have!! Michael, you ought to have gotten one of those DVD's as a comp, for all of the thoughtful words you expressed in the liner notes!
  16. Crown!!! TONE QUALITY! Phantom and Bluecoats. I liked their hornlines this year. So I guess I agree with many posting here.
  17. Took the words right out of my mouth! The mothership has landed!!
  18. We DID have tour fees. It was not as expensive as most corps these days, but we did have tour fees. The tour buses were nice, however the buses that Memphis Sound (Div 2) used in '04 were just as nice if not better. Yes money does make things easier. But it's the blood, sweat and tears of the MM's that ultimately make a champion. I'd never heard of the $$$ being spent on recruiting members. The Yankees have the highest salary cap in MLB but they don't win a World Series every year!
  19. Same sentiment here! All Star alums are like long lost family to me and I'm sure many others feel the same. I miss our corps and the people that were involved. Such special memories that I'll cherish forever. Anyone who has ever marched corps should feel the same way. I should sum it up like DVD would post. Just a simple..... :)
  20. Mr. Van Doren marched with the Muchachos. Went on to work with the Crossmen and then he was also involved with the Cadets (Early 80's) and I believe '98 Also he was the caption head for a little corps called Star of Indiana. He's also involved with Blast! He was inducted into the DCI Hall of Fame in 04. He has a few Jim Otts under his belt. Amazing instuctor and demands perfection. Blue Star should be in very good hands. Now if they can get Jimmer to arrange for them..... WHOA!!
  21. What's up Aldi? It's all about the Breathe DAH!!
