  1. I call BS. No one did what we were doing in all through '80 tour. By Finals though, a number of corps—including Spirit and 27th—had swapped in asymmetrical pieces into their drill. Take a look at the '80 DVD. From '80 on, corps embraced asymmetry in their drill. '80 SCV changed the activity forever, and set themselves up quite nicely with a DCI championship in 1981. True that Cadets took the asymmetric drill to a new level with explosive moves like the Z-Pull, however, none of that would even exist if it weren't for '80 SCV paving the way. '80 SCV was the first corps to perform an entire show without regard to Side 1 or Side 2. If you don't think that's revolutionary, I don't know what is.
  2. Great review dude. Best one I've read in awhile.
  3. I wouldn't get too excited. We'll see what happens by Finals.
  4. You guys are off to a good start. Keep it up!
  5. Would be awesome to have a few more bad-aZZ baris and as many more contras for our push to DCA! Waddaya Waitin' For?
  6. I hear ya Bro, but just wait. The ending has just been added. From another SCV Alum, "5th movement drill - OMG!!". So, stay tuned!
  7. BD is SICK this year. I don't see how anyone will be able to compete with these monsters. Hard core drumline, horns loud as Hell and crazy visuals? You bet they're going to be the ones to beat this year.
  8. It's very cool and a great move for BD. All corps should do something like this. Unfortunately, not all corps have the kind of infrastructure you need to get this kind of thing done-unless it was totally outsourced. As I understand it, this app was designed by BD staff. I applaud them for getting the difficult work done! Sounds like there are a few bugs, but those will probably get taken care of in incremental versions. The only complaint I have is that I wish the splash page were prettier than just some gray nav buttons, some cool BD graphics and color would be nice. Other than that, I think these guys have done a great job. I look forward to seeing the development of this app. It's far more sophisticated compared to what any other corps or even DCI has right now. Phantom? You need to hire the BD guys!
  9. BRING IT ON #####ES! DCI is just so...1980s! Get with it people! About time we get the #### Blue Devils (and their arch rivals) to HOLLYWOOD where they belong. This activity deserves it's own reality show culminating in an anything goes style "blood feud" battle of the bands decided by TV Polls and "band fans". It's just made for TV. @#$ INDIANPOLIS!!! Finals should be in LA every year and shot in front of thousands of adoring "band" fans. You want this activity to be more popular? Get it on TV. Another thing: get this activity indoors so that the performers will have total control over their environment. Fireworks? Water? Jet Packs? Guard members flying on a wire? Synths? Amplification louder than a Motorhead concert? You wouldn't pay for such a spectacle? GO LOS ANGELES BLUE DEVILS!
  10. Hi All, Found this on the Anaheim Kingsmen Alumni Forum. It is of great historical value, so I hope they don't mind that I post this link: '73 Anaheim Kingsmen Enjoy the splendor of the 1973 Anaheim Kingsmen!
  11. I grew up in Santa Clara, CA. SCV was my local corps. It was "normal" to see girls spinning rifles and flags in the front yard. My buddies from Cupertino High School told me to join the "B" Corps, which was filled with youngsters. I did my time and got to see the A Corps many times, even had a slim chance to join mid-tour. This was 1978, so they won DCI that year. Fantastic corps! I then got my shot at the A Corps in '79, my rookie year. Great times!
  12. You guys really improved last year. All the best this season!
  13. I was there. Great to see so many alums! Yep, I got seconds. Plenty of vino, too. Both the A Corps and SCVC hornlines played. They were very good! The Cadets are almost all from the Bay Area and the A Corps has a majority from California. Fiedler's idea is to try to make SCV as local as possible. I like the idea, as far flung alumni aren't as active after they age out. SCVC sounded very "ol skool SCV. Nice arrangements and decent power. Much better music than last year. The A Corps had a very strong sound. They kicked off the standstill with a bizarre chord that sent a shiver through the crowd, Bartok, without a doubt. Then, MORE Bartok! Strong trumpet statements, barking baritones, mello runs up the yin yang - some good bottom end. The music? Some accessible - some, not so much. The "not so much" though was very interesting. With a good number of vets returning, they will have a good hornline in 2010, no doubt. A nice touch to the event was when the hornline played "Londonderry Air" AKA "Danny Boy", a tribute to George Bonfiglio, who recently passed away. Best of luck to these groups!
  14. It was recorded on March 28, 2010 at the SCV "Spaghetti Dinner".
  15. To my knowledge: none. A few DCA corps still march G bugles: Renegades and Empire Statesmen among them.
  16. Be careful though. It may make you want to join the corps for the '10 season!
  17. Pit Viper, "V", the "Vanguard Yell" and Bass Cadence are SCV Trademarks for sure. However, they don't do these every year, especially (as was said) if they don't belong in the show. If that were so, may as well have the "Bottle Dance" every year too, yeah?
  18. Last things of note about the SCV guard uniform of this era. 1. This version of the guard uniform included "gauchos" instead of the skirts they had worn since the corps' inception. 2. The uniform of this style began in '79. 3. The "doo rag" was added in '80 4. The red feather was added in '81 5. The more frilly collar was added in '82 (therefore, the above photo is more than likely '81) 6. '82 was the last year for this style of uniform for the SCV guard. 7. After '82 the uniforms became more feminine and suitable for dance. 9. '82 was the last year the guard wore white boots. 10. The guard uniform has changed most every year since that time.
  19. I marched with a guy in the Kingsmen Alumni that aged out with the Blue Stars in '79. He told me of the tortuous exercises and "windbag" preparation that went into that ###### hornline. Those boys could blow!
  20. Nice photo! As you can see, the scarf was a very different shade of green. You can also see guard members carrying Royer's infamous "Bedknobs" in the background.
  21. Actually, it's not Baris, it's Frenchies. Royer said that he knew that SCV would win nationals if the French Horns nailed their part in the opener, "Die Gotterdammerung (from The Ring)". And they did.
  22. '77-'78 SCV "Overture to a New Era". Just awesome and one of my favorites.
  23. Yes Sue, it was a shade of light green. The white sleeves and different shade of green in the scarves added a bit more color to the field. In '82, they also added a red feather to the aussie. To my knowledge, that's the first year they did that. My friend used to live up on Twin Peaks. Great views up there.
  24. Right. I believe the "doo rag" was de rigueur for the uniform from '80-'82. '79 was the first time that the guard's uniform was altered since the '72 season. As you can see, the sleeves and collar were tailored to reveal a more feminine blouse.
  25. Another shot of Diane Bonte Figueira. Lovely lady.
