Places that need drum corps

Recommended Posts

San Diego, CA.

The talent in the Poway Unified School District alone could support a Div. 1 drum corps.

Give me 5-10 years. ;)

Isn't Esperanza from San Diego? I know they are inactive but I thought they had a few good years. I've always liked their shows.

Hey Frank - in all seriousness, what about Marinette/Menominee? There used to be a show up there

back in the 70s and early 80s. That area could really use a dose of Drum Corps again!

haha

sure they could......from everything I've seen when I go up there, there's just no money in either place to be starting a corps...so the Northernaires just do their alumni thing every year and most are happy with that.

From what I heard, the last time they hosted a show there it was rained out and they lost tons of money on it. And the current regime up there won't do it during Waterfront, which would be the best weekend to have it. They say that people would just stay down at the waterfront and drunk instead of paying to go to a show, which is probably true. So yes, they're still scared of losing money again.

I'd be for any Corps where 50% of the members live in the actual city that is listed in the program book or on the side of the Corps busses. Not sure how many marchers in The Cadets actually live in" Allentown, Pennsylvania". Good point about Boston too. And how many of the Cavaliers live in " Rosemont, Illinois " ? and how many of the Bluecoats marchers and staff actually live in the city of " Canton, Ohio " now ? Or Phantom Regiment marchers and staff that actually live in " Rockford, Illinois " ? My guess, less than 50%. It's just the way it has all evolved.

There is no " east ".... " west "..... cities, towns, etc anymore in Drum Corps. Good, bad or indifferent, city and region ties has gone out the window, except perhaps where the Corps gets their cash ( but not the kids ) to do it all in the summer. That's why I selected TEXAS. That sounds like an untapped source for Corps ( from wherever ) to get their cash and say in the program book and on the sides of Corps buses that they are from are from "WASHINGTON, D.C" or " ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI " or wherever.

Drum corps is no longer about local ties. When corps were funded by local CYO, VFW, or other local entities, it was important, but now corps are self sufficient non profit entities and the community based corps is no longer germane to the activity. Frankly, I don't know how the Bluecoats ever survived when they were a home grown corps (up to about 1988-89). If we had to depend on 50% of our talent base coming from NE Ohio now, I'd say we wouldn't be a top 12 corps.

Michigan in the Ann Arbor area somewhere around there. There are Plenty of Musicians from colleges, high schools, ect. Oakland County, and Washtinaw, Livingston county and kids you would get from the west side of the state and Lansing area

but this me only a dream because I don't think that would happen  so I guess I'm stuck driving an hour and half to rehearsal :worthy:

I know this is a Div 1 thread, but Michigan has come up a few times so far here.

Legends Drum and Bugle Corps is based out of Portage, Michigan. Check out the website at legendspaa.org for information on this growing organization. This summer there were members from Michigan, Indiana and Illinois. The opportunity to support and grow a DCI junior corps in Michigan is in place if you want to support them!!!

Pipe dreams, and Lottery wishes aside............

I believe that a new corps can survive only if the city or region they are in fit a few angles:

1. The state allows Bingo or some sort of Monte Carlo event. All the love and inspiration cannot fund a corps. The new corps needs to start fundraising before they start recruiting members. Possibly a board of directors doing the fundraising. I would also envision presidents and CEO's of local SUCCESSFUL business be on the board. Reason's for some former corps folding had to do with their board of directors not being able to see the forest for the trees.

2. The region needs to be spread out. This would lend me to say the central pains. The reason I say this, is the corps would not have to compete with big city offerings for kids. The kids are in great marching bands, because it is an outlet for them. And a sense of pride for their community, that does not have NBA, MLB, NHL, AFL, NFL teams to support. The situation would be even better if their is a small college with a marching band in the area. Use the "adult" students sense of "corps" to be your foundation.

3. DO NOT TAKE ANY BIG RISKS!!! This is the biggest way to kill drum corps in your community. You dont have to be DCI champs to help kids enjoy the experience. Look at Columbus OH....... Limited Edition (LE) came out smoking in 92 and then gone..... fast forward 10 years ..... Cap Reg came out smoking in and round 2001 and now.... gone. Take the time to build your local drum corps..... good thing come to those who wait.

Thats about it for now if you are looking to start a corps somewhere.

South Florida has a corps, They are just inactive. www.kiwaniskavaliers.com

I'm not talkig about Kiwanis....we need a fresh start! There is enough instructional talent and potential membership to get a Div. 1 corps up and running.

OKLAHOMA!!!

or kansas

Oklahoma keeps getting mentioned but how would you fund a corps here? The golden goose of bingo has dried up. Indian Casinos have flooded that market here. Sure there are other sources but it takes money to make money.
