Madison making their comeback again...

Recommended Posts

I was not that long ago that there was a thread World Class Discussion board about getting rid of rifles. It almost made me CRY ! Oh how I miss real guard work ! ( Sorry about that last comment to all you youngsters ). I also miss those paint peeling hornlines and drumlines ! ( I was a paint peeler myself ) I really miss the music of the old days as well .

I've came back to drum corps and have had to except that it has changed. I like what they are doing these days but it is just so differant than what I did in my day. I know the one thing that has not changed , HOW HARD THESE KIDS WORK !

I don't think there's anyone on DCP who'd object to a throwback-era-caliber rifle line doing their stuff down front, like in the old dayz:

Ahhh. That's the stuff.

Hear, hear! From the '79 show in Chattanooga:

It wasn't just the early '80s. I remember them having an ace rifle line every year I saw them, and they certainly were legendary before then. Everything I've watched on DVD from the mid-'70s onward looks pretty amazing, especially for its time. It wasn't until about the mid- to late '80s, as I recall, around the time Cavies began to hit their competitive stride, that Madison's guard became somewhat hit-or-miss; far better some years than others.

I beg your pardon ?? j/k. Actually, analyze each year by itself, the guard was very competitive and prominent until the late 90's. Late eighties and early nineties guards were outstanding, check em out if you might have forgotten. I recall a down year in 93, but a rebound in 94 that continued until 1999. Now as far as "Superguard" status, the entire eighties fall into that category, including chances at high guard in 85, 87, 88, winning guard in 83. The "City of Angels" colorguards were simply amazing.

I don't mean to imply that I thought they weren't very good in those years. What I meant by not being "wowed" by them is that there were years in there when I just wasn't blown away by them in the way that I had come to expect. I clearly remember going to the St. Louis show several years in a row -- and this would've been in the early '90s -- and being totally amazed by them one year, then rather underwhelmed the following year. I suspect that was around '90 or so. I agree that the "CIty of Angels" guards were fabulous, but I don't think those are the years I was thinking of.

Just because you spend your day watching porn like Hollo Dolly dont get upset with me. I gave you the $35 I owed you, what more do you want from me. By the way, say Hi to JS for me since I know he's laying next to you in bed.
