Fran Haring
The Gloversville NY DCA show early in the 1978 season... Sonny was judging brass at that show. We had a guy in our lower baritone line... Brad Diable (Cliff Diable's brother)... who could really pump some sound through that horn. Not at all shy about producing volume, to say the least. His nickname was "Decibel Diable." LOL At the post-show critique, Sonny told one of our brass guys... "There's a lower baritone on (whatever side) of the field... he has three volume levels: Loud, louder, and Holy Christ!!! You gotta reign him in a bit!!!"

We had Barnsie the Blaster (last name Barnes) who was 2nd or 3rd Bari. Field shows he was OK but at standstills I'd hate to be in front of him. The Bicentennial Train (remember that?) was at New Cumberland, PA 1975 or 1976. We did a standstill and Barnsie was just overplaying and staff kept looking our way. I was standing next to him and after the show one comes to me. All I can think of was "Great we're both short and I'm going to catch it for his playing". Nope... I was asked "How's your ear with Barnsie going to town next to ya?" *smirk* "We know who's doing it because he keeps leaning backwards every time he does it. Sounds like crap and looks like crap." LOL - forgot we played that until I saw some pics my mom took. They couldn't make our concert but have some great (blackmail) shots of my sister in her Fonzie (Ahhhhhh) t-shirt. rayfallon
Sonny is listed as Support Staff (no years) on Sun's website ... Joe, Mike, Tony and the budding ______ are all listed as members :-) Honestly, as long as I knew Sonny I knew him as a judge, and that goes back to prehistoric times. Maybe he got involved as a consultant when the kids were movers and shapers. Always thought that the GWer pictured was one of the classiest Sunrisers I ever met, although I didn't get to work with the corps while she was on the podium. Great family - the early loss of her brother was one of those tragedies that every corps goes through. Brad Diabolical was easy to locate with or without his blastissimo approach to the instrument. He and Mike Dominic both looked like they shared Michael Bolton's hairdresser. Brutal, even for 1975 and 1976. Unlike my clean-cut, crewcut look. Never a hair out of place. Edited October 30, 2013 by rayfallon
