rayfallon
There's a photo of Madison's 1980 Trombonium Section on this page: http://www.drumcorpsplanet.com/forums/index.php/topic/149516-1960s-baritone-carried-like-a-contra/ And yes, Ray, I did kind of "invent" the G-bugle version. The idea was to get a more authentic "Stan Kenton" (Frank Rosilino) sound for the Blue Devils. I thought of it as an additional voice, not a baritone substitute, but most of the corps arrangers treated it as the latter, which it couldn't be. "Not loud enough", was the knock on it. Sheesh. Hey, it lasted about as long as Jack's "Meehaphone". I sort of liked the idea. Edited August 4, 2014 by rayfallon
rayfallon
Hey, at least you tried to keep it in "G"!! You may get a sheepish look from Frank on that one. I'd be a little surprised if he (like me) was not among those that wanted to get it over with, get all three valves and get the horns built in multiple keys, because eventually they were going to be, and why not do it and start building better horns sooner, rather than wasting good money on horns that were doomed to be around a very short time. Yes folks, I was in favor of Bb/F/Whatever back as far as I can remember - back into the 60s as far as that goes. One of the stupidest wastes of money I can ever remember was buying a whole set of brass lacquer horns with Bayonne before 1978 and having to get the mellos and contras as one valve and a rotor because you could only replace one voice per season at the time. Geez.

Jeff Ream
I don't have Facebook so I'll wait for the discussion here. I don't think you failed with your Madison post. I remember hearing a Fleetwood recording of Madison in 1959 and trying to figure out why they had bells. In 1995 when everyone LOVED their hornline I remember wondering why they couldn't play in tune with that much talent. I agree with what you said about the choices of music - it should be perfect for that corps. So now I'm wondering what they're going wrong that they can't scratch the top 6 or so. They have a brass guy in VanDoren who has won with multiple corps, and won big. Why isn't this working for them this year. Don't worry about trombones - they'll go away. (my prediction) I play a trombone and I love them, but they're too weird for marching. With big time University bands they're never in tune. With the intricacies of drum corps movement they're too weird in shape and function. I just don't see them sticking around. Of course I said that about the "trombonium" when 27th used them and that lasted almost 2 seasons. ya never know. it'll stay a sideline instrument for solo purposes
