Marion Cadets

An alum of Marion Cadets and Bluecoats...

It was a sad day in Marion Cadet history when we had to relinquish the Ohio title. 1975 was not a good year for the Marion Cadets. The corps got a late start with a poor show and never got rolling enough to catch everyone. But the corps came roaring back in 1976. Winning back the beloved Ohio title was important, but THE important thing to do was make finals that the US Open. Got that back in 76 too.

The current version (or non-version) of the Marion Cadets presents a conundrum for all concerned. First off, the city of Marion would struggle to support a corps or the US Open. Its apparent that the city cannot support either. But at the same time, one has to understand the the entire character of junior corps has changed dramatically since the Red and Black of Marion Cadets existed, or the beloved US Open. (I think we all understand that here) The new Marion Cadet regime that took over did its very best to distance itself from what was the image of the Marion Cadets. Changed corps colors, threw out every single vestige of the old corps. Many beloved artifacts went straight to the landfill. After running a small (very small) ensemble for several years, and provoking DCI into instituting the "Marion Cadets" rule, the organization failed to field a corps four years ago. The administration has since used corps funds to start and run a bingo operation, use the busses to operate gambling junkets to several casinos out of state, and purchase rental property surrounding Cadet Hall. No ensemble of any ilk has appeared for over four years now. Mostly talk, no action. Revenue continues to be extracted from fundraising operations, but there is no visible attempt to invest revenues in the "real" reason for operations.

This is where the disagreements lie. There is a desire to operate an organziation in the community that reaches out and serves the community and youth of Marion. It is hard to ask a local business for support for something that looks like, acts like and sounds like what they think they have been supporting at Cadet Hall since before 1960. Yet, the original organization has stopped functioning, only collecting. There hasn't been any apparent investment of funds into the community.

A previous poster suggested that Carl Gannon is what is wrong with drum corps today. I would argue that the current Marion Cadets is what is wrong with drum corps today. The Marion Cadets of 2008 is a POSER. They are posing as a drum corps, extracting cash as they can from the community, and not performing the functions in which they have promised. The Marion Cadets are accused of perpetuating a fraud on the community of Marion and on the community of Drum Corps. The actions of the Marion Cadets help give drum corps in general a bad name....in the community and globally. If the Marion Cadets would use the revenue and the community support to put out a drum corps...even a bad drum corps...no one would be able to argue the platitudes of their existence. What Carl and others have brought to the drum corps community's attention is that this group of POSERS....posing as a drum corps...bring shame to drum corps, and hurt the community. Equally adversely affected is the relationship between drum corps (in general) and the music education community of Central Ohio.

Carl Gannon actually represents all that is good in drum corps. Here is a gentleman (and he is) that has devoted his life to the activity. He was a loyal member and taught drum corps until a ripe (old?) age. He did return and endeavor to assist the Marion Cadets. Yes, he did go to Canton and teach after he aged out of Marion. Yes, he was very successful, and was rightly honored by membership in the Bluecoats Hall of Fame. Carl still teaches in the community of Marion, and has endeavored to bring his students into the Marion Cadets (unsuccessfully). Carl would lay down and bleed for drum corps. He wants to do that again. He is frustrated and angered by the posturing and fraud that is being committed upon the community of Marion, a town where he has lived his whole life and dearly loves. Any drum corps would KILL to have a guy like Carl.

Carl is fighting back with the only weapon he has available....the public scrutiny. He is endeavoring to be vocal in the community of Marion, and in the drum corps community...both of whom he feels are being compromised by the current fraudulent actions he perceives. Carl deserves the support of Drum Corps Nation...and of the community of Marion. I support him. I hope you do too.

The stall is only one sided.A local tv station tv 22 has offered to host the forum but the Cadets will not return any calls. They did talk to the director once and he refused to talk.If you go to tv22@marionohio.tv you can pull up the interview with myself and they will be airing another one soon. It's like the one reporter said if they have nothing to hide you would think they would want to tell their side. Also the youth is not suffering a independent drum line has been started called E.O.R Essence of Rythm with kids already practicing and they are local kids that Marion claims they can't recruite.

Gees we have about everyone who couldn't make it in the activity chiming in now. Not sure I have seen any solutions listed yet just a lot of reminising about how great things were in your mind. By the way VFW or American Legion in Ohiop, kind of like the Miss Turtle Creek contest.

If Carl is so great why doesn't he start something himself or is he really a plumber or a cook?

Which one chiming in didn't make it in the activity? Carl? Scott? Friends from G-men? Me?

For those too young or inexperienced to understand, back in the day in Ohio and most areas, INCLUDING NATIONALLY, VFW and American Legion were the championships. State titles were something to be proud of.

I think Carl stated he is starting something. And I believe he has already begun to garner support within the Marion community.

WOW JUST WOW. ARE YOU FOR REAL? Wondering minds want to know. Who has chimed in that didn't make it in this activity? There is not a Show today that can compare with an Ohio State VFW or American Legion Show. Why? Because they were Open Shows. Which means there was no divisions. We went head to head on the same sheets. If Ohio Corps sucked so bad, then why are there 2 top 12 World Class Corps from Ohio today? I am sure that the Glassmen and the Bluecoats are very proud of their Ohio roots. Since you have not seen any solutions, please, tell us your solution. Besides slamming Carl.:tongue::thumbup:
