John Mayer
Hi Drum Corps My name is John, and I'm a snare drummer. I didn't always drum the snares, it all started with just hitting the cymbals back in the 80's, and then I started doing tenors. Doubles, triples, quads, quints, sex, you name it I did it all, and just could not get enough. It got so bad that I left my coprs for other corps, why mommy why? Then I started trying snares, woowoow, this thing was light, and I didn't need a road map to play it. Now all my tenor friends have left me, I still have a few cymbal chicks I hang with, but I'm not sure how much longer I can hang out. If there are any old snare drummers out there, help me find the future. Who over 40, and playing on the field? I think I need to start SDA This has not been the voice of John Mayer

What's the age breakdown of the corps? Just cause it's senior corps doesn't mean you have to be old... I would know... So let's just break it down... Percussion, Brass, Guard Age <21, 22-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, >60 Whatcha got in your corps? Edited June 25, 2008 by ErieSopMike
Mike_B
Hi john, I'm like you , only older (53). I've played everything drum and horn except contra and marimba. ( thats only because I don't want to). Snare just got to be too much of an aerobic workout for me (they rarely stop playing), so I play bari now. Occasionally they let me back in the drumline for mini-corps to play quads or latin percussion. Also, bass 1 was a lot of fun a few years ago and very light to carry. It's all good. T-birds oh, I just saw the "on the field" part.......never mind! Edited June 25, 2008 by Mike_B

Fastone
The last year I marched (2000 Brigadiers), I was 48. The following year, there was a Marine cat who marched there that was 52. From 1985 on, I was by far the oldest guy in any of the snarelines I marched in but, it didn't stop me from being as energetic or as active as the youngest person in the line. I did that by faithfully working out 3-5 times per week, weekends were my time to be a kid again. I think you can do it as long as you're willing to keep an open mind about change and be pro active with physical training. Pit_Girl_77
Hey John-we have the "Old Pharts" club of over-40s in GCS, it currently includes 2 snares, I think 2 sops, and 2 baris for sure. Last year we had some more in the brass line, one drum major, and one in the guard as well. I know there are some more that are creeping up! I was thinking of Ronnie and a few dudes from the Kilts when I started this thread. I have always had lots of respect for these guys, and wondered if I was up for the task as well. The other interesting thing about the Govies , is the parade line, I'm not the oldest. Roark is 61, and Bob is 72. WOW!
LegendBattery
In my younger years I played 4th Bass, Tenors, and Snare. Now at 42, I am back playing 3rd Bass and lovin' every minute of it!!!!
