KeithHall
Are California DCA corps judged using DCA or DCI sheets? They could pick the last show to use as their regional championships but if they are judged using DCI sheets that may be a problem. I agree.....Further, by holding these "regional championships" either one or two weeks before DCA weekend, but ALL on the same weekend, using DCA sheets, it could provide for more accurate seeding in the preliminaries. Every year we see MBI and SF 'gades come east with their DCI-sheet/judge-scores and have to work their butts off to get a good slot in the finals. Would MBI have stopped at 2nd if they weren't "seeded" 5th in prelims? Additionally, with so many class A corps emerging, this gives them a shot at getting a good slot as well....... and it serves as a culmination show for those corps not heading to Mecca. For even MORE accurate placing, it could be conducted using a twist on how DCI does it in their big show....over 2-days..... schedule east and south on Sat & Sun using the SAME judges in the SAME captions at both locations (Atlanta/Scranton?). Schedule Midwest and Pacific on the same Sat & Sun using a common judging panel there, too. Although it would probably be better if the judges viewed East/Midwest and South/Pacific combos to get all four regions on the "same sheet." HWTBOT
I like the idea. Local folks need to see a good big show. Based on where you live a regional could be the only opportunity you have. It also allows family members who cant travel to Rochester or Scranton to share the excitement we feel.
Jeff Ream
DCA sheets, but everyone leaves for tour in mid July.Donny if there is any Open Class shows out there, they can still get work and use the DCA sheets and these days with DCI, everyone leaves for tour the day after camp is over
84BDsop
DCA sheets, but everyone leaves for tour in mid July.Donny Which leaves no shows for Renegades or SoCal Dream (or Kingsmen if they get going...same for En Garde if we ever field)...leaves them at a little bit of a competitive disadvantage since they're getting no reads, no audience feedback, no scores until prelims. CA Srs have been on DCA sheets since 2005, if I recall correctly....prior to that we were on Div II/III sheets. One thing that COULD be looked into (after Kmen and EG get going so we can pool resources) would be to host a DCA show (presuming the DCAWest region gets sanctioned) somewhere halfway between NorCal and SoCal (San Luis Obispo comes to mind) and not only have the Srs, but also have the Jrs that aren't making the trip to DCI....give them another chance to perform as well....but on DCA sheets! Maybe even tack on a limited I&E as well....need to think about that....such a trip is an additional expense and while the fuel and bus costs MIGHT be doable, the housing would probably be the dealbreaker for anything other than a single show. The advantage of SLO is it could be a day trip for the corps....take off in the wee hours of the morning, get a good day of rehearsal, then do the show and drive home in the wee hours....doable on a Saturday. 84BDsop
if there is any Open Class shows out there, they can still get work and use the DCA sheets By the July shows the World Class corps are already in the middle of their tour....there are a few shows with mostly Open Class, Srs, and one or maybe two World Class (PC, typically)....but after mid July, all the DCI corps going to nats are gone and there are no more shows. 2007 was the ONLY time since I've been involved that there have been any shows past mid July. BOSMarcher
I like the idea of rotating the show (corps sponsor a regional, then the next corps, then the next corps, etc). This makes it fair for corps traveling far distances.
BOSMarcher
You also don't have to pay for a neutral stadium. You could work something out, like each corps divides the gate, or base it off a percentage traveled. JohnZ
the other distinct advantage to having the corps take turns hosting a regional championship show, it would boost each host corps' efforts to build a community presence and fan/potential recruiting base for each regional partner. Much better situation than locating a centrally located show where few likely have an existing interest or knowledge of drum corps in general, or of the participating corps specifically. IMO True, but there may need to be travel considerations. In the NE where there's a long, established DCA history it'd be easy to rotate a championship show...just take an existing one and designate it as the champs (logistics aside) Out West, tho, we have no long history and few corps...going with the possibility I mentioned, a central location works out better...a 4 hour drive is a bit more accaptable than an 8 hour one for one show (props to Heat Wave for the travel THEY had to do for shows!)
