so Jim

where you staying in the finger lakes? On Saturday... don't let your wife loose at "the Windmill" flea market - it will cost you! There's a wonderful restaurant near there too... just outside of Penn Yan

Good thing our travel days are Saturday. Especially since we just traded the old small sedan in on a larger station wagon (can haul back plenty of "stuff" ). Our "home base" will be in Ithica and plan to hit a different spot each day and also enjoy the drive back and forth. Our first trip to the area so probably each morning, we'll just pick a place and go. We don't mind driving back and forth but having a heated pool and breakfast at the hotel is a "must". :lle:

Just noticed Penn Yan on the map yesterday so will have to keep the resturant in mind... Thanks.

Funny thing is after looking at NanciDs DC history blog, a LOT of those small towns look familiar (Geneva, Apalachin, couple more I can't remember right now). Never realized how many corps came from the area.

we should be off line on this... forgive us Mr. Donovan - but it's good information

Staying in Ithaca is fine but you are on the far Eastern edge of the finger lakes... Please keep in mind that some of the best sites are toward Watkins Glen and Hammondsport.... especially the Glen itself

Seriously, the windmill is an amish (lots of them in the area) Farm and Craft Market that is only open on Saturday but it is quite amazing... perhaps you could shoot over there before leaving... www.thewindmill.com

Just north of the Windmill is Essenhaus Restaurant 1300 Route 14A Penn Yan NY 14527 - it is well worth the drive www.essenhaus-restaurant.com 315-531-9500

you might also look into the Keuka Maid dinner boat on Keuka lake and Sarrasin's on the Lake restaurant near Keuka Lake on Rt. 54 315-536-9494

Thanks Tom, will print off your last post for reference.

Yeah, staying on one end of the Lakes area makes for lots of driving but we wanted to see a little of everything. And didn't have any idea of where the best areas might be. Oh well, can't be any worse than when we spent a week in the San Francisco area in 1992 (before all the earthquake damage was cleaned up). Had a retro-active back and butt ache when we realized how far we drove in total.

And I also owe Mr D one for getting off line....

LOL, seeing the Amish In NY.... how unlike near my part of PA.
