Liahona
1990 BAC in Buffalo, NY was a heartbreak year for me...that was when there was still prelims... bartyount
1994 was a big one. Boston came in looking at 12th and i think the Colts shocked everyone with their first ever finals appearance and snuck in there after semi-finals making BAC wait another 5 years. Let me know if i got this one right or not. Actually Colts made their first appearance placing 12th at finals in 1993.
Pinwiz
Actually Colts made their first appearance placing 12th at finals in 1993. And they were in 12th at POC, so while Boston was a surprise at Quarters it wasn't really an upset.
SkyRyder_FMM
In 1988, Sky Ryders came from a 15th place slot to place 12th at semis. I say slotted only because we had not beaten Freelancers or Crossmen even once in any meetings prior to that. We had not even competed against Dutch Boy at a show and they had been beating Crossmen as well when they had met at other shows. That was my first year marching and '88 semis was without question the single most exciting surprise of my whole drum corps career.and a great example of home field advantage. Kansas City may be in MO but it still has Kansas in the name...close enough. Our drum major in '92 SCV had marched with Dutch Boy in '88 and I am positive he was still sore about that night. Jeff - Sky Ryders beat Freelancers several times in 88. We never beat Crossmen during the regular season (though were always within a couple of points), and never saw Dutch Boy until Semis. We had an unreal performance. Going on last in almost a home show didn't hurt either.

jwscv87
I know some people would talk about 1979 Crossmen slipping into 13th after being clocked by Troopers for the first time all season. Actually if you go to corpsreps.org and check 1979 - you will see a VERY odd score ranking: 12 - 77.900 Troopers (finals score) 13 - 81.700 Crossmen (prelims score) Now how can this be, you ask? It's a long story - but when Crossmen lost in prelims to Troopers in the afternoon, they were asked to come back that night to perform in the Associates Championships. Ironically, the score they got would have beat Troopers, Cavaliers Blue Stars, Northstars, Madison, and Guardsmen at finals the next day. They came up six points - from 81.7 to 86.15 - in one day. To be fair - Troopers perfomance that morning was one for the ages. BTW - not noted in many official records, but here are the Associate Champions from 1979: 1 Crossmen 86.150 2 Offensive Lions 78.600 3 Freelancers 78.000 4 Garfield Cadets 77.300 5 Royal Crusaders 75.800 Mav That is interesting - must've been grueling to perform competitively so much in such a short window. The score drops from semis/prelims to finals happens almost every year. Not to to such a huge degree as '79, but still almost without exception. From '79 to 2008 the 12th place score went down on finals night 27 out of 30 times by an average of 2 points. In 1980 the Guardsmen were 11th in prelims with a 79.55. They dropped almost 7 points on finals night to a 72.90. North Star only dropped by 5 points so they were able to jump up to 11th in finals. Going on last in almost a home show didn't hurt either. Hutch and Sac went back and forth all season, and the crazy thing was, it was never close score wise. One night Sky would win by two points, the next night the Freelancers would win by two points. In fact, there was a stretch of a couple days in Texas where each corps swung 6 points both ways. Freelancers seemed to win all of the major regional events until we got to finals week. There was one thing about Hutch that year... they were HUNGRY for that 12th spot. Every time we saw them at a show it seemed that they were using their warm-up time for visual rehearsal. They had the drive and the desire and the right corps made finals that year. We might have been in battle, but looking back, it was an honor to share the field with them in 1988.

boilerman_05
They were never overtaken by anyone for the #12 spot, but in 2000 Southwind placed 12th or better in every caption at semis but didn't make finals because of spreads in each caption were such that the overall score placed them 13th.
