Blind Band to March in Rose Bowl Parade

Recommended Posts

The tenor player (he marched Cadets and then BD) is Matt Bauer (sp?). I remember the interview they had with him on the DCI broadcast--apparently his biggest worry wasn't his chops, or his ability to march, but his ability to read the music because, well, he couldn't. So he learned to memorize music very, very quickly.

I know a guy who marched with him at Cadets, who said Bauer could look at a page of music once and play it from memory. Yow.

That was Barbara Maroney. She marched with Garfield 1981-84. INCREDIBLE soloist!! I believe the horns up/down story is false though.

An Interview With Barbara Maroney

I found the caption for this picture to be chucklesome:

maroney2.jpg

"Barbara Maroney demonstrating why it's hard to become a recognized mellophonist."

I hope the horns up story isnt false....i learned it while i was in the corps, and shared it with multiple people since then....

I don't think it's true...Garfield did snap downs when she marched...not all of the time, but there are moments where it's clear (midway through the 83 show, for example)

I think the Scouts had a kid on keyboards back in 75' who had a prosthetic leg. I knew one gal in a colonial corps who played a fife and was escorted in her wheelchair. I've known kids with diabetes and even cancer. Asthma cases seem to be a dime a dozen. Never heard of a blind person in a marching ensemble before though. That must be a pretty tough asignment. I hope that they do well.

When I taught high school, one of my students brought the former Scout mallet player to one of the plays I directed. Not only was he a very good mallet man, he was also a gymnast. Rings, if I remember correctly. Incredible upper body definition.

As a reminder to newbies, in 1975 mallet players marched, and this guy marched with only a very slight hitch in his stride.

Saw one of the Govies play his horn with one hand this year but no idea of the reason why....

He only has one arm.
