pearlsnaredrummer77
Thanks Gary! Yeah I missed out on CD of A. They were done by the time I got involved, unfortunately. I did however see the Meridian Woodpeckers all girl fife and drum corps. They were down the road from Butler and taught by Andy Taracs, jr. During the early 80s. lindap
… another excerpt from the same 75 magazine. AAG traveled to the 76 summer Olympics and Claudia went to Europe in 1977, as did I. I’m grateful that the organization gave me the wonderful opportunity.

baja
Maumee Suns - from program early 60's "enthusiam and zeal" Sounds like a phrase one would use in the 60's for a descriptive writing course. Keep in mind the average age of these members was about 14 or 15. Notice its "an eight man percusion section" but "an all girl color guard". alankarls
I'm working on some drum corps history and came across these. They are two of the oldest ads for drum corps shows that I've found. The first is for the 1932 Wisconsin American Legion State Championship show in LaCrosse Wisconsin. It is from the LACROSSE TRIBUNE AND LEADER-PRESS, Sunday, August 14, 1932. The second is for the 1945 Kenosha Roundup, from the Racine Journal Times, Thursday, August 9, 1945. The roundup is an example of what drum corps competition was like at the time. While AL, VFW, SAL and some fraternal organizations sponsored drum corps contests at their annual conventions, independent drum corps contests began in the 1930s as just one attraction at local music and social festivals. As you can see, at this VFW sponsored event, drum corps shared the billing with clowns and circus acts. Some may say that they still do.
