Why Announce Where the Corps is from?

Recommended Posts

Ok. I'm convinced. There are a lots haters in Baltimore for the Colts. I thought the city was behind that sorry saga where the owner had the equipment truck take the Colts gear out town unannounced in the middle of the night.

I'm open minded. it is possible to be persuadable by compelling and convincing arguments if one is open minded. I'm convinced they still hate the Colts after all these years, even with a new NFL replacement team in Baltimore. As it relates to DCI, we won't be seeing any Corps by the name of " The Colts " starting up anywhere near Baltimore anytime in our lifetime, that's for sure.

One of the good things about this site is that mistaken information or misimpressions, can be rectified.

DCP does serve to educate and advance the truth and sometimes not enough credit is given by some in the activty for this.

Yeah....im sure it doesnt help that the colts have been so successful over the years either....and that indianapolis has all the old baltimore colts records and memorabilia....

So yeah....drum corps....

All drum corps has to do is follow the lead of our "Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim" baseball team and be from two places at the same time. The Garfield Cadets of Allentown has a nice ring to it  .

Tid-bit:

When Santa Clara was picking a name for the corps back in 1967 we narrowed the list down to three names, The Spartans, The Cardinals and The Vanguard (I actually voted for Cardinals). When Vanguard was selected Gail Royer said the only caveat with the name was that it had to be proceeded by Santa Clara (since we actually practiced in Santa Clara, not Sunnyvale) and there were other corps with the name Vanguard (Des Planes [skokie] Vanguard) - hence the name, The Santa Clara Vanguard. I can't imagine not saying the full name when announcing the corps.

Yeah, I'm thinking that when people talked about "Vanguard" in the early 70's most ment Des Plaines. So when they would say "Vanguard", people would ask "Which one?" and "Santa Clara" would come out. It just became easier to say "Santa Clara" minus the "Vanguard" when talking about SCV. It distinguished us from Des Plaines and has stuck ever since.

I'll never forget one show when an announcer came on and said "And on the starting line, the SANTA CLARA!!!! (pause)... er, VANGUARD!"

Priceless.

And MADISON Scouts.

SoCal Dream, Jersey Surf and Carolina Crown to a lesser degree.

This is different though, these are actually a part of their name.

Sure we may call Jersey Surf "Surf" and Carolina Crown "Crown", but that's part of their name.

Same with Boston Crusaders and Santa Clara Vanguard.

Its not "The Rosemont Cavaliers", its "The Cavaliers."

If watching the 1973 "Competitive Drum Corps," which features The Vanguard, when they are announced, "Santa Clara" is not uttered. I can't remember if it's after they are done performing or before, but the PA announcer says something like, "There they are folks, all the way from California, The Vanguard!"

A good thoughta bout the 2 Vanguards. Maybe that was the main reason why the corps were announced where they were from, because during the days when VFW and American legion was still invoilved, the regional model was still the mold. So you had way more corps back in the day than you do now. In other words, you had more than one vanguard, regiment, crusaders, caballeros, cadets, knights, etc...

I think it no longer makes sense in DCI, but it makes sense for other drum corps genres.

DCI has gone showbiz and the key there is to assemble the best acts. This means assembling groups where people come from all over and the groups are run logistically at the most appropriate facilities and locales in order to best to achieve their goals.

Ed Sullivan didn't announce: "From Liverpool, The Beatles!" No, he just said "Ladies and Gentlemen, The Beatles".

DCI has become way too complex and all about the product to focus too much on the location. Plus, the corps all look and sound the same now. It's very homogenized.

When I meet the wonderful members of the Boston Crusaders, I do notice that not a one of them has a Boston accent, or knows too much about the place which is their namesake. That's fine though. It's what DCI has evolved into. I have no problem with it because, over there on a grass roots level, in the other drum corps world, drum corps seems to be re-inventing itself. There are more alumni corps, DCA competition corps and community -all age- corps than ever. It's all good. Actually, because DCI has gone bigtime, and is more of an elite club, I see it as my mission to do my part and recreate a community based drum corps. These corps, and most DCA corps should definitelty retain their sense of place. There is much heritage in these corps still.

In the information age, the digital age, drum corps is having a renaissance. We can communicate in so many ways now to keep the drum corps fires buring during the offseason. We may look back at these years and point to the time where the activity was saved from extinction by the internet.

But I digress.... location, mention is not too important to a DCI Corps.

The Concord Blue Devils members are not from the local area for the most part. But the Blue Devil ideal is definitely home grown. The staff of the Blue Devils has remained consistent more than any other corps with some being there for 30+ years. John Meehan, although born in Casper, grew up in Concord and in the Blue Devils to lead the bass section today. It was the local "kids" in the 60's and 70's such as Scott Johnson, the McFarland’s, the Odello's that decided early on that they would be the best that they could be while respecting the individual to achieve that goal in a professional environment. People from around the world come to the organization to participate in that experience. For that I am extremely proud to hear

“FROM CONCORD CALIFORNIA....THE BLUE DEVILS!”
