Gary Matczak
I was going through a stack of old show programs looking for show line ups, scores, exhibition corps, other show advertisements, etc. for the purpose of updating the Thunderbirds Archive of Corps Scores on our website, and I came across a program from a show in Tallman, NY that Erie was in, Tallman is located right on the NY/NJ border.............the lineup included Cabs, Sun, Hurcs, Matadors, Erie, and exhibition by St. Ignacious Girls..............This must have been an epic trip for the Thunderbirds at the time as it was probably about a 10 hour trip one way,................anyhow, I have two questions I need helps with,..............one for the archives, one for my curiosity,.......... 1. I could not find any indication of the year or date the show was held,...........I've asked a couple Erie folks who can't remember,...............can anyone help with that? 2. Take a look a this photo of the Hurricanes from the program book,..............there is a planted set of chimes down front, was this controversial at the time? JimF-LowBari
2. Take a look a this photo of the Hurricanes from the program book,..............there is a planted set of chimes down front, was this controversial at the time? Hoo boy, I remember Hurrcs used chimes kinda like this in 1975. But IIRC (fat chance) there were less bells in the chimes in 1975 and possibly 6 contras (and chimes on other side of field???). Don't remember any controversy in 1975 but the guy who played the chimes was marking time as he was playing. BTW: In 1976(?) Hurcs had two boxes of balloons that they release at the end of the show. The two guys who opened the boxes marked time when the corps was marching. Caught the M&M judge checking them at a show. Edit: Looked again and I see the "balloon boxes" on the back sideline. Are you sure this is a early 70s pic? Edited March 23, 2010 by JimF-3rdBari

Gary Matczak
BTW, I do remember seeing Hurcs photos with a guy carrying a rigged up marching set of chimes,..................Really!
JimF-LowBari
BTW, I do remember seeing Hurcs photos with a guy carrying a rigged up marching set of chimes,..................Really! That sounds familiar too and might be part of my memories but could be a 27th Lancers flashback. But that WOULD explain why I kind of remember less bells in the chimes..... And those balloons could be 1975 or 1976.... or both.... **ugh** Edited March 23, 2010 by JimF-3rdBari
buzzgok
Gary, it also looks like they have tonal bass drums. IMHO, I would say that this was probably in the very early stages of corps planting things up front for use during the show.

Man yer kicking in my old memories Gary. You're right that not many corps did it but as long as the stuff was inside the field boundaries guess it was all legal. I remember 1976 Rochester Phoenix had a mounted bass drum and rope type snare sitting backfield when they weren't being used. Think they were only used for intro to "Legend of the One Eyed Sailor". But yeah, seeing something just sitting on the field then was wierd looking....

As I recall, Ohio Brass Factory began "pitting" mallets and tympani in 1982. Others began in 80/81 within DCA...

Gary, the Hurricane archives lists that show on July 31st in Spring Valley NY Caballeros 88.35 Sunrisers 83.30 Hurricanes 75.90 Matadors 70.75 Thunderbirds 68.80 The pic appears from 1975. The chimes were used in "He's got the Whole World"....a perc feature, as well as the production of "Hallelujah Chorus/Jesus Christ Superstar. And no, there were never any issues raised with the use of the chimes....they were played by our marching bell player. Hope that helps
