Any thoughts...especially from people who were at the Wichita show...about the Glassmen performance? Diane Machado had them in 6th place (last place...) in Music GE - behind Spirit and Troopers. I've got no opinion as I've not seen Troop, seen Spirit only once, and Glassmen only twice...and I HAVE called for judging to show just this kind of 'all over the place' swinging from caption to caption. Also, in music ensemble, Allan Kristansen (is that the right spelling? Got if off the recap...) had them in 6th place in Musicianship, and 5th in Technique.

Thoughts?

Yeah, but I think unfortunately it shows the inconsistency of the judges and how differently they hear things on a field in a given show. It should vary, but if two judges hear the same show on the field, I bet they could still call it two ways. Each hears his own thing and has his own focus. Ultimately its human error and even the judges can't always agree!

Even as good as top 3 corps are, you telling me that if he gets around rookie 3rd sop and 2nd mello in the wrong spot it couldn't get ugly? Even the big boys have their younguns these days! You are right, it should be closer ideally, but it's what it is when humans are involved.

Now apes judging? Might be interesting...

I digress..

This year has been terrible for judging inconsistencies. Any more, the top 3-4 corps can all consider themselves the champion, because with a different panel they would be.

I was at the show. The Blue Stars guard did not have a bad show. They had drops, but so did everyone. Glassmen do have a nice guard and they looked very clean from where I was sitting. However, it is hard for me to understand that kind of spread.

Regarding Crown and Bluecoats, if Crown performed their entire show like they do the first 7-8 minutes, they would be beating the Bluecoats. The Bluecoats are very good - great sound and very clean, but the visual beauty and overall show difficulty does not match Crown. Tonight performance beat design. Crown needs to perform the end of their show better. One thing that I noticed, that could keep Crown from challenging for the title, is their drum line seems to be lost during large sections of the show. I was listening to the horns and watching the guard and would not even notice the drums for minutes at a time. That did not happen while watching the Bluecoats or the Blue Stars.

The Blue Stars seem ready to take off score wise. I would have had them in the 84-84 range and was surprised by the 83.3 (until I saw the CG score). I think that will turn out to be anomaly. I am looking forward to seeing where the Blue Stars stack up with Phantom tomorrow and how that spread changes over the next ten days. I have a feeling it will be getting smaller.

Interesting, at the La Crosse show I had almost the opposite impression of these two shows, except for the drumline comment. I found Bluecoats show to be visually and musicaly more demanding than Crown and performed at a higher level. Crowns hornline seemed louder, but that was it IMO. I guess now we know why the judges have such a hard time agreeing on scores lol!

The guard sheet is ensemble based. Content and Achievement..both 10 pts. Achievement is directly related to the Content. Content from corps to corps does not always contain the same depth of writing. "Timing" "drops" and "cleanliness" are relative to what is being asked of the performer.

Awful hard to argue against BS content, they're doing things never attempted in drum corps and there are very FEW guards out there that can say that.

it's hard to compare them (glassmen) to other shows IMO. the show isn't at all like the competition, which, IMO, is fine - but, I think they're getting a bad wrap b/c of it. I thought they looked great. There's still a long way to go, and there are some feet/drill cleaning issues. But I think they earned what they got last night.

i also think the show has a bit of a slow start, but that's just a personal opinion of mine.
