Second, All I ever hear is that it is extremely difficult to get the rights for this music. How then did Blue Stars get the rights? BradF Posted April 21, 2011 Share Posted April 21, 2011 We applied for, and received, copyright permission from the Orff Family to perform Carmina Burana in 1989 and 2000. Although I wasn't personally involved with that aspect of the corps during the 2000 season, I've been told that the corps' 1989 arrangements and performance helped in securing the necessary permission in 2000. elmhurstmusiced Posted April 21, 2011 Share Posted April 21, 2011 One thing to keep in mind though is that much of the music listed as "no-play" can often, and will often be granted permission, at high school, college, or drum corps level. The funny thing about Carmina Burana is that it has been denied, yet the man's music was often written (although not in the case of this piece) for education/student purposes. A lot of times people do not take the time, or start early enough to get the correct permissions to use the music. I arranged a piece in 1998 from one of the Batman films and the director did not start seeking permission until the piece was being learned by the students. He did not hear back from the company until after we had changed the song. Even though the drill was written for Batman, I had to write a new arrangement of a different selection, using the Batman counts. Then we GOT permission for Batman, but stuck with the new piece. There are pieces that will not be granted permission, but if the work is done, usually you can get what you need. As for those pieces/composers that are typically listed as "no-play," here are some examples of where that rule goes out the window. Music and film scores by John Williams-Since 1995 alone, over a dozen corps have performed his music. Music and film scores by Thomas Newman-Spirit, Capital Sound, and Vanguard Cadets have used his music Music by Joaquin Rodrigo ("Concierto de Aranjuez")- 1995 Madison Scouts, and close to 15 others "Riverdance"-1997 Pioneer Music by Vincent Persichetti-1988 Blue Knights "Ritual Fire Dance" by Manuel de Falla-1994 Phantom "Carmina Burana" by Carl Orff-Performed by many gourps "Escape From Plato's Cave," "David" and "Wait Of The World" by Stephen Melillo-He let's you use his music if you cough up enough money, and he "approves" of your score, even though he doesn't know a great deal, or have much experience in the marching arts. "Mission: Impossible Theme" by Lalo Schifrin Just some thoughts/info on the subject.
