corpsband
It's not easy to find a "business" that can afford to dump $1-1.5M of its profits into a drum corps. A lot of what makes successful businesses is re-investment of profit back into the enterprise, so the business's total net profit must be even higher !! If it were easy to create and maintain a business like that, every corps would already be doing it. Tusayan
I believe Star of Indiana got their start by setting up businesses up for the purpose of funneling money into the corps. Wrong. Star got its start with a $1 million grant from the Cook Group. The companies came later. Nice idea but not every corps has a billionaire benefactor. glory
Starting a business is easy. The hard part is running it. That is why drum corps are not in business. Being good at drum corps does not translate automatically to being good in business. HH

Well it wouldn't need to pay for everything, since fundraising and member dues are still a viable source of revenue, but 100k a year would certainly help any organization. And that's 100K not available to the business to reinvest in marketing, facilities and/or other sustaining investments. One of the reasons most (all?) of the corps that used to operate their buses as a business in the offseason no longer do so is they couldn't operate those businesses profitably. Even the ones that weren't running up losses weren't generating sufficient returns to justify the investment. Running a business isn't easy. Yes Was there a drum corps that owned their own buses? Yes Is the drum corps active? No Are the new buses still running? Yes Travel is a good thing to see places you've been to or never been to before
Jeff Ream
Cadets had a bus company for a while; the band I teach used them for a trip one year. Not sure if it was too expensive to operate or what, but I don't think it is in operation anymore. Never hear about it, anyway. During the week, the cab to Westshore's equipment trailer was leased out to help make money

lindap
And? HH 1 of the 2 businesses continues after 34 years based on 'supply and demand' and alot of hard work. The other remained as not for profit and evolved in the entertainment sector but closed their doors in 2004 mostly due to not enough local kids joining and lack of funding.
