Northern Thunder
Thanks Brian, read somewhere that Hawthorne Cabs were in an old cigerette commercial but can't find any info. Just bought a DVD set of 1,001 commercials with couple of dozen cig commercials but no Cabs. Have Lucy and Desi in a Yes, Jim, Hawthorne did an L & M cigarette commercial back in '61. I once saw a newspaper print ad for another cigarette brand (circa 1940s) that had a full color illustration of an all-girl drum & bugle corps. Northern Thunder
Another corps logo I wondered about was the "yin yang" logo used by Avant Garde (NY). I'm sure it must have had something to do with the fact that the corps was the result of a merger between the Speigleaires & Emerald Knights. JimF-LowBari
Yes, Jim, Hawthorne did an L & M cigarette commercial back in '61. LOL, the 40s ad was probably next to another cig ad where the doctor says he likes to smoke before operating so he can relax. Will have to check but pretty sure L&M was the brand in the Desi & Lucy ("I Love Lucy" for you youger folks). With Desis' style of music that would fit very well. Gary Matczak
Oh great... so I've been wearing a shirt with a Casinos logo on it at the the Navy base? Eh, I've seen worse. LMAO, glad you said this.... Not what the OP asked for but Westshoremens "W" with the sword started around 77/78 to get away from the old very "busy" logo. Also the old logo had the old name in it. LOL, some members didn't like it because it was too simple... And have read that the Cavs emblem did come from a cigarette pack. Believe History of Drum Corps II covers this in the corps write up. the Tbird logo changed to the current one after the move from Meadville to Erie,............late 60's, early 70's,............if you look at the photo in the link, we even use(d) the font of the neon letters on top of the place............funny story,.............because our logo had so many ###### colors, BITD, our corps shirts/patches/jackets, etc. cost a freakin fortune,...... JimF-LowBari
The Erie Thunderbirds logo was adapted from the Thunderbird Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas Look Here and compare to my avatar Now I'm at home I can see this... whadda hoot.... will have to show this to my dad to ID the cars.... guessing mid 50s. John Sebastian on the sign?? Just wiki'ed and see that the "Welcome Back Kotter" John S is the son of a "noted classical harmonica player" so must be Sr up in letters... fsubone
Santa Clara's Star isn't a Star. It is an archetypal representation of 8 V's (as in Vanguard). It is connected to the 8 individuals who started the corps from the Sparks organization. (or so I have been told). Glassmen's triangle... is just to represent a piece of glass. They are from the glass capital of the world. The Glassmen one makes sense, I never thought of it that way, I only recognized the name from Toledo. i've never actually heard that story about SCV. I had heard a rumor that the stars came with the original uniform purchase, so they just stuck around, but I could be wrong. Is anyone from the early days of Santa Clara around here to input? Bossop
Boston's "Waldo" was conceived by a couple of members (One of whom was Gil McDonald who still marches with the Senior Corps)when viewing a Lowenbrau sign in a local bar. At first it was black and not named Waldo. At the time, several local corps, including the Crusaders had some sort of knight in their logo, and they wanted something different. They thought the split tail made their lion unique. Several years later, it got the monicker "Waldo" and several members claim to have been the namer. This is the conventional story, and I believe it to be true. I would only add that whether intended or not, the split-tail lion "Waldo" was also the standard (logo) for King Richard the Lion-Hearted, who, as we know, travelled from England to the middle east and fought in the CRUSADES...making him one of the first and original Crusaders.....pretty cool, huh? Just bought a DVD set of 1,001 commercials with couple of dozen cig commercials but no Cabs. Have Lucy and Desi in a few and even the Flintstones pushing Winstons but no Cabelleros. Too bad I don't know much Jr corps log/uni history. CT Hurricanes Sr/All Age corps was named when a hurricane tore thru their home area. And the ligthning bolt logo is the storm warning flag symbol used by ships. And all these Cavalier posts causes me to ask the question - Was there ever a Viceroy Drum & Bugle Corps anyone's ever heard of?
