Its a small world...

Recommended Posts

I'm a fifth teacher and there are 4 days of school left. In order to keep the kids interested in class I've started showing WC Semi-Finals (2011) in the morning. (Don't Judge! :satisfied: )

One of my students said, "My dad did that." Um, maybe. I'm so used to people saying "oh yeah, I know about that. I've seen the movie Drum Line", that I was a little sceptical. Turns out he was! In the early 80's he was in connection with both the Crossmen and Phantom Regiment! We were both so suprised to find out that we wound up talking for 20 minutes! Even cooler, he played the exact horn that my kid plays. It really is a small world.

I would love to hear about chance encounters you've had!

My Professor in one of my Master's Degree college classes had a Son that was a soprano soloist in a Junior Corps, and at the time of my class was a soprano soloist in a DCA competing Corps. We chatted a lot after class about Drum Corps and his Son. Later his Son was inducted into the Drum Corps Hall of Fame.

1) I was in Vegas about 4 years ago, and I was wearing a Crossmen shirt and hat, and when we arrived at our Casino to check in, the woman working behind the counter asked about my clothing. I told her about my time in the Crossmen, and she then informed me that she had been in the color guard for the Cadets one of the same years I had marched. We talked for a few minutes, and she even comped our room for a night!

2) I was in a elevator in New York, NY, (wearing a Blue Devils Drumline shirt) and an elderly couple was in there with me. The lady asked me if I was on staff for the Devils. Before I could even utter a sound she began to scold me about how 'WE' (meaning the BD organization) were going crazy, and the David Gibbs had lost his &$*$*$& mind designing that show in 2010. It was a very uncomfortable/humorous 20 floor ride with her ranting. I never even got the chance to tell her that I don't work for the Blue Devils, and she probably to this day would spit on me if she saw me again, just because she didn't like the 2010 show. lol

She likes elevator music, perhaps ?

Its not so bad. You had to go 20 floors with her. Her husband had to go 60 years with her.

Da dum crash!

I almost felt like interrupting her, and saying that I was hurt because the whole show concept was mine. Just to see her reaction.

At least I did better when people thought I was on corps staff. I bought and put on an older long sleeved Govenaires shirt at DCA cuz it was cold out and my wife had my warmer jacket. Guess the DCP "Guess Who" badge I wore looked like a staff pass as 4 people complemented me on the corps show. Including one guy at the hotel (where the Govies were NOT staying). Never thought to ask which part of the corps they thought I worked with...
