They competed at a couple of RCA (Red Carpet Association) senior corps championships in the early 1970s. Does anyone know if Vern Acklin was the name of a town or veterans post (VFW, American Legion)... or was there a guy named Vern Acklin who decided to start his own drum corps? "The Vern Acklin Memorial Drum and Bugle Corps was organized in 1932 under the sponsorship of the Boy Scouts of America. Up until 1935, the corps was instructed and directed by several different men and in 1935 the leadership was assumed by Vern Acklin. The corps continued to compete as a junior corps until the war years when there were several years during which the corps was inactive. The corps was organized in 1946 as a senior corps and since during the interim Vern Acklin had died, it was thought that it was only fitting and proper that the corps should carry the name of Vern Acklin as a tribute to a man who had done much to build the corps. The corps operates as an independent organization having no sponsorship of any kind. They are financed entirely from the prize money they win and fund raising activities which they conduct. They have steadily grown in stature since the reorganization as a senior corps in 1946, winning many prizes and titles throughout the tri-state district. Among these were the 1947 Allegheny County Firemen’s Championship, the Tri-State Championship of Chester, West Virginia, and the 1949 State Firemen’s Championship. The musical director of the corps is Americo Ricci and the drum instructor is Dr. John Schrenker. [From Verona-Rosedale Kiwanis Festival of Drums souvenir program, June 11, 1954]" What's an RCA? Had a 7-Up patch on the shoulder of their uni, and I think they had a 7-Up logo on their bass drums. The corps you describe is the Babylon Islanders, a junior corps from Long Island. They competed in the Greater NY and Northeastern Circuits. I have to confirm and affirm your correction of Mike D that the Babylon Islanders and Floral Park Mid-Islanders were two separate corps. I would add that the Babylon Islanders also competed in the Sounds of Suffolk Circuit and had DCA Judge and WGI show coordinator Tom Beresford as Drum major for awhile, at least before he went on to the Selden Cadets. Brasso seems to be playing with us with his selective choice of corps names, particularly those with a double meaning, if you catch my drift. However, he finds the State of Washington Black Watch notable but not the Black Watch corps of Southern N.J. and whose CG is still competing in WGI. Black Watch was the type of Scottish tartan both corps wore, not the beverage. Now DCP is not supposed to be a dialogue of religious beliefs I understand, but CT's Our Lady of Sorrows' parish corps references a Marian title Mater Dolorosa in Italian, referring to Mary's seven moments of pain in Scripture. Best image of this wouid be the famous statue of Michaelangelo, the Pieta. Now that is an unusual corps logo. And weren't the (Post 507) Hornets the corps Hopkins marched with as a kid before the Hornets merged with the Keystone Regiment to form the Crossmen, a cross of two corps? But did have an enjoyable bus trip listening to a former member of USAF Bolling Field corps giving his eye witness account of retreat....
