Over-the-Top DCI YOUTUBE Copyright Slap-Down

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

I cannot add anything conclusive, but let me add some perspective...

DCI and the directors probably would all tell you that exposure on YT in isolation is a net positive result.

Having music licensing companies and composers exposed to their works as free videos is a negative, resulting in compliance issues, removed songs from DVDs, and the threat of lawsuits over it (merited or simply aggressive for settlement).

If you compare these two, and weigh the risks under careful analysis, you will come to one of two conclusions; play ball with the licensing people, or lawyer up. Either is valid, but I believe that if you suspect that DCI's staff is just willfully ignorant about this, you would be incorrect. Maybe someday soon, it will just make sense to "just do it", but that day isn't there yet for DCI. I believe they feel it is too important to show good faith efforts to the composers and licensors, and trade the exposure that would otherwise be gained.

Again, that may change in the future, but the legal climate will probably have to be clarified first. Remember, DCI would be a bigger, more lucrative target than some middle school band. One monster lawsuit, and DCI goes under (win or lose). I'm sure that is more important than YT exposure in the big picture.

Thanks. Carry on. :)

If you don't like it, just stay out? You obviously didn't contribute anything.

Cute.

YOUTUBE contact for complainant -- jpeterson@dci.org is not a valid email.

Asking them to retract and I will remove, as now my YOUTUBE "strike" will prevent me for 6 months from posting "unlisted" training videos for the corps I am assisting with video this season. You can go "private" but you have limitations on how many can be invited to view "private" -- far fewer than members in a corps.
