What's the purpose of DCI

Recommended Posts

This has probably been hashed and rehashed, but I'm just bored.

What's the purpose of what DCI has become?

Is it for the performers?

Is it for the fans?

Is it for the money?

Why do we have so many contests when there will be VERY VERY VERY little movement in rankings from now until finals?

I'm just curious. I've got a REALLY REALLY long winded opinion on this, but I want to hear other's opinions first.

I think it depends on who you ask. I'm a fan and music connoisseur but I have no official involvement with music other than when I played in high school. I'm in med school now and drum corps is the perfect study break for me. I love the passion, corps identities, and community drum corps has to offer. I do care about where corps place, but I just love the thrill of loud, difficult music being played while moving. It's very unique and admirable.

As a fan, it's for entertainment for me. I love the sound and thrill of hearing a corps live. Ever since 2006, this is the community I love being a part of (though I didn't partake in the community until this year) every summer.

As a performer, I've only played with my high school marching band, but I love the thrill of performing in front of a crowd, and one day I hope to take that love to the max in drum corps. :)

Do you mean what is the purpose of the drum corps activity, or what is the purpose of the entity known as DCI - the "organizer" of the activity?

Umm...have you been to a show lately?

When you do, look around you. Look on the field. See those faces? That's why. If you don't get that then for you the purpose is to just buy a night's fun entertainment, so just leave it at that.

I can't get enough drum corps. Why would I want fewer shows to attend?

I guess the entity. But to be honest, what about the activity. Because for each person it's very different. Take the center snare for example, she started at Bluecoats and then went to Blue Devils. Let's be honest, I know she's from California, but if the Bluecoats were winning championships and had Scott Johnson would she have left?

I've been to plenty of shows and I watch everything I can on the Fan Network. I think the experience is different for each person and that was the root of my post.

I think you're missing the point on the amount of shows. If placement doesn't change, why do we have rankings at the shows? If it's already slotted or whatever, then why can't we take the competitive aspect out and just enjoy drum corp. If it's about competition, then why isn't there any? That's my point.

Hopefully it won't. I didn't start it to have people bash and get mad. Just merely to gauge peoples opinions.
