Traditions

Recommended Posts

One of the more public ones is receiving their cross sabers for their age out year. There are more, I just don't know how much the current members would like them shared here.

One Troop tradition that is public happens each June 11 at 11 a.m. The corps, staff and volunteers assemble, face toward Casper, and the horn line plays a traditional arrangement of "Battle Hymn." Corps founder Jim Jones was laid to rest on June 11.

What I love about the tradition is that it happens during preseason. There is no crowd. There is no applause. There is almost no one there to watch them. There is only the corps, and the music, and the respect.

This and the crossed sabres are both beautiful examples of what I was looking for when I posted this question (i.e., traditions available for public consumption). I appreciate your sharing them and letting us all in on those wonderful Trooper traditions!

A couple of my good friends in So Cal are mid-80's era BD alums and as such I spent some time with them in front of BD's warm up arc at the Riverside show last month. After the warmup before the hornline headed to the stadium, the current MMs broke into their respective sections (baris, tubas, etc.) and were joined by alums who had marched the same instrument. Each "current + alums section" then did their own little preshow hype, which I thought was a really neat way to solidfy the "BD Brotherhood".

I think SCV began singing "Simple Gifts" prior to shows sometime in 85; I remember singing it as we marched in line toward the stadium entry gate but I don't know if they do that anymore. Little things have morphed over the years-- the parade rest move & position (usually the most current form is adopted in a joint MM/alumni setting, like in '07), and I think it was during the "New Era" that the MMs adopted the practice of not walking on the field (always around it) unless it is during rehearsal.
