A GE judge sitting way up in a stadium booth is being asked to distinquish between ( for example ) a brass section playing that is unamplified, and another Corps where the sound that is reaching his or her ears up in the booth is fully amplified. More than one Corps this season has the entire brass line amplified in at least major portions of their show. Judges are well experienced, well trained, and do try to get things right. But they're only human. They're being asked to compare and contrast and judge music that is amplified with music that is non amplified. Add in disparate instrumentation to the comparative mix to be judged, ( and other synthetic produced disparate sounds ) and who here would want THAT job ?. Not me... lol!... Thats why I do cut these judges slack, and why you'll rarely see me complain about the judges themselves. A GE judge should not care how the sound gets to him or her. They should judge the sound itself, regardless of how it is produced.

Soundboard could control the volume & balance. Heck, you could make a 2-piston or even valve-rotor fake bugle! True. We had a funeral service a few years back it was a Marines funeral who was killed in Afghanistan. We took the time (VFW) to make sure the bugler was real, the father of the Marine came to me and thanked me for ensuring that no poser played at his son's funeral. I told him to expect nothing less from a former Marine grunt such as myself and the team that helped the USMC with the funeral arrangements. I think if DCI does go with fake bugles or the brass only in the pit then I'm truly finished with the activity. I'm old and don't time to get upset about to much.
