1.  Which Canadian bugle manufacturer introduced the first mellophone in 1964 and the first french horn in 1968?

Dunno. I believe that Toronto Optimists were the first corps to use mellophones, but I don't know the manufacturer.

2.  In 1958, Opti-Danforth changed their name and began the longest unbroken championship streak in drum corps history, with 11 titles from 1958-1968. Name the corps who had John Wayne as an honorary member.

Toronto Optimists. I knew about the 11 consecutive Canadian Nationals titles, but didn't know about John Wayne.

3.  Name the corps formed in 1937 and known for pony-stepping, short-shorts and "Waltzing Matilda".

Scout House.

4.  In 1963, in Mundelein, IL the Cavaliers and this Canadian corps, with an almost identical uniform, performed in retreat as a single unit.  (Hint: both corps were known as the "green machine")

Toronto Optimists.

5.  In 1964, the Jolly Jesters and Viscounts merged to form this enormous senior corps with fluorescent orange uniforms.

Canadian Commanders.

6.  Where were the Sertomanaires from?

Sarnia, Ontario.

7.  We know tha De La Salle, who marched 32 snares in 1940, were from Toronto.  Where were the La Salle Cadets from?

Ottawa, Ontario.

8.  Name the contest held in Toronto each June during the 1960's.

Shriners International Pageant?

9.  In 1976, both Oakland Crusaders and Seneca Optomists made D.C.I. finals. Which corps won Canadian nationals in 1976?

Oakland Crusaders.

10.  Which two corps merged to form Oakland Crusaders in 1975?

De La Salle Oaklands and Etobicoke Crusaders.

11.  Which two corps merged to form Seneca Optomists in 1976?

Toronto Optimists and Seneca Princemen.

12.  Which two corps merged to form Northstars in 1976?

Flying Dutchmen and Dutch Boy Cadets.

13.  Which corps, formed in 1910, is the oldest corps to have charter membership in D.C.I.?

De La Salle Oaklands.

14.  Name Oakland Crusaders' drum instructor in 1977, when they won drums at D.C.I. prelims, but the corps failed to make finals.

Tom Float.

15.  Name the corps who won 1977 U.S. Open at 3:00 a.m. due to a rain delay.

Seneca Optimists.

16.  What was unusual about Oakland Crusaders' rifle line uniforms in 1978?

They didn't wear the Aussie hat worn by the rest of the corps. We didn't have enough hats for everyone, so the rifle line wore black bandannas instead. And we also didn't have enough plumes for everyone, so the flag line wore the hat, but without the plume.

(Edit: After reading John's reply, I'll add this clarification: The rifle line started out in the regular uniform worn by the entire corps, minus the Aussie hat, and wore that for the first half of the show. Underneath that uniform, they wore white shorts and white bodysuits with a black bow tie and, I believe for most of them, at some point they also added short black capes. Nancy wore a long black cape. My memory is kind of flaky on that, because we made a lot of changes from first tour to second tour. Anyway, they shed the regular uniform three-quarters of the way through the show for the production number/magic act during "King Herod's Song"/"Black Magic Woman," and that's when the white costumes first showed up. I initially read your question to ask what was different about their regular uniform as compared with the uniform of the rest of the corps proper. The hat was the only difference there. But later on, for the magic act, they wore the white costumes.)

17.  Name the corps from Jonqiuere who won Canadian nationals in 1978.

Offensive Lions.

18.  Name the first Canadian corps to play at Carnegie hall.

Well, this was probably back in the '60s, when there was a series of drum corps concerts at Carnegie Hall. But I can't tell you who the first Canadian corps was to participate in that series. I would think it was either Del or the Optimists, but that would just be a guess.

19.  What was the first year of D.C.I. Canada in Hamilton?

1979.

20.  Name the corps from Kitchener that won both D.C.I. Class "A" and D.C.I. All-girl in 1980.

Ventures.

21.  Name the 1982 D.C.I. Class "A" champions.

Dutch Boy.

22.  Who won both 1983 and 1984 Canadian championships?

Les Eclipse?

23.  How many Canadian corps competed at 1981 D.C.I. prelims in Montreal?

Three. (Note: I assume you're referring to Open Class prelims, not Class A or All-Girls (because there were several Canadian corps in those classes, too). But, if you're talking only about Open Class, it seems to me there were only three . . . kind of ironic, considering the championships were held in Canada. But that really points to the continually declining state of Canadian corps :( by that time.)

24.  What was the name of the stadium at McGill University where 81-82 D.C.I. prelims were held?

I thought it was McGill University Stadium. What am I missing?

25.  What did Les Chatelaines change their names to when they added males in 1984?

I believe it was Connexion Quebec.

26.  Name two drum corps artists who hail from Canada.

Don Daber is one. I can't think of another.

I thought it was the other way around. I hate to run for a book, or website, to back up my memory. Still the drumline was better in 82, which may account for my thinking 82 was the better year for the corps.

Regards,

John

I was looking at '82 from the brass POV. We lost Mike (new job) and Paco was doing the best he could. Then Norm was able to hire Cliff mid-way through the season. Mark Petty was doing the best he could with the horns, but he's a percussionist as well as doubling in the visual caption. Let's not the mention the interval stick incident. :o

Horns were rough that year. I just now need to find where I saw the recaps online.

Canadian drum corps trivia rules!!!!!! :P

byline--

Sue, you need to do these trivia contests rather than I-- because you have a

better approach on clarity with the questions (the background info on #16 was

AWESOME!!). However, sarnia sam scooped you timewise!!!

Keith Hall--

Great job Keith. Unfortunately, you too were snaked by sarnia sam!!

Old Dutch Boy Cadet--

Regarding a previous thread on returning a DCI show to Canada, remember to

point out that almost 40,000 people attended 1982 DCI finals and in 1981, there

were 16 Canadian corps participating in prelims!! Numbers don't lie!!!!!

BTW, I have a copy of prelim tickets from 1981 that say Molson Stadium :silly:

I remember going to some club in Toronto before 1981 DCI with Cavie FMM Jeff

Mason and drinking too many Bradors :sigh:

Aha, Molson's. They slap their name on anything that isn't moving. Even our new rec entre here is likely going to have their name on it because they donated the land.

Brador, you can drink too many (somwhere around 6 or 7), but who wants to stop when they are that good.

Regards,

John
