"1976 Scouts show 1"

Oh yes, the Ludwig Vistalite drum shells with the red and yellow and green ribbon or stripping. Stopped me in my tracks.

We called those things "the jelly beans." We got rid of them also when we did the show change.

- but very few people realize how close in score Madison was to BD's.

The key here IMO was degree of difficulty across the board (GE Visual also) which in-turn rolled right over to the GE numbers. Who will ever know, "what if".

IMO, one week, or one month would not have changed the outcome. And, BD's 2-point spread at finals was still a good margin of victory (though we did close it somewhat compared to where we were a week before). "1975 Redux" didn't have the same magic the previous season. . . For chrissakes the friggin hornline was phasing at the beginning of "MacPark."! And, "Stars and Stripes" was a real let down compared to "Slaughter on 10th Ave": it sounded pedestrian compared to "Slaughter" in '75. The bottom line: our season sucked! We got what we deserved.

Rich, if we had have won with those things I'd probably feel differently about them. But, they symbolize a difficult season--they bring back painful memories.

The pic was taken in mid-July in Madison after we returned from the California tour. We were in transition between the "Disco Show" and "1975 Redux." The snares had just gotten new chrome drums and the tenor line was still awaiting news tenors. By the way, I'm the tenor second from the right.

Hey Dan - regardless of those drums, didn't Madison have the DCI tenor champ in 76 or 77? Was it you?

I was mistakenly crowned the 1976 tenor champ--I did win in 1977. Because of a judging error, Rob McMillan from BD was denied the award that evening in '76--I finished 2nd. The judges mistakenly put Rob's tenor sheets among the snare contestants!!!! Unbelievable! It was as the military says, FUBAR!

Rob and I reversed positions in 1977. The interesting thing, I first heard rumors about this error during DCI finals week in 1977, but nothing corroborative at that time, or since. DCI never informed me of the error. This past summer (aided by the internet and e-mail), this event came to the surface and the facts Rob provided were undeniable: he won in 1976. And, he was rightly given the awards ceromony denied him nearly thirty years ago this past summer in Denver. We've been in correspondence since last year and get along great. In fact, through Rob's initiative, we're co-sponsoring award scholarships for future DCI I&E tenor winners. So, ultimately, good came out of this sad affair.

I marched 27th's tom line 76 and 77. A few of us would enter the traditional winter individuals here in the northeast, but it seemed only a few snares or a few sops would enter back then. By 1979, we had kids in every caption entering.

I remember standing around waiting to go on for our finale in Denver and you guys were nearby. I remember wondering which one of you was the champ.

Have you had a chance to play on a set of quads? I marched the 27th Alumni corps in 94 - middle tom guy of 7 players. What a breeze to have two drums in front - and the biggest drum in 94 was smaller than our smallest from 77 !!!!!

Although I loved 27th, there will always be a "what if" in my head had I gone west and played on the proverbial "toilet bowls." I heard that they weighed a ton.

So - here we are - 28 years later - a shake of the hand, and a tip of my hat in your honor champ.
