johnboy
I have never been on this forum before so forgive me if this is in the right area. I am a Pipe drummer from northern Ireland and I am wondering if any of you lads have done any thing called a drum ripple. Its a bit like a chain reaction of beats down a line of snare drummers. The swiss drum corps perform the trick but I was wondering if there was any secret to to getting it right. PS The video link below shows the swiss corps and the chain reactions are after the flag routine. http://www.putfile.com/media.php?n=top-secret Any help would be appreciated. NR_Ohiobando
I'm no percussionist, but the 'ripple' effect is basically like an extended bass drum run. Like...one drum plays on the 1st two sixteenths on the 1st beat, next one plays on the 2nd two sixteenths on the 1st beat, next one plays on the 1st two sixteenths of the 2nd beat, and so on and so forth. Or in that particular case I think they were fast triplets. You just have to divide up sixteenths/fast triplets evenly with the beats so it follows in a pattern where each drummer plays right after the other. Again, I'm no percussionist, but after watching that and listening to many a bass drum runs, that's what I got.
PioGuyBW
I know that Pioneer did at least two (that I saw). Maybe try to get ahold of Mickey Hartzog in Texas, or have the corps office forward mail to him.

This was a nice simple feature, the whole drum to drum exchange was just accented 16th notes, the stick ripple, go back to the begiging of drum corps for that. North Star made it very popular in the middle 70's. I was nice and simple and effective, they carried thier drums well, the bass needed to be cranked up and tuned a little better as well. Anytime, Anything is close to being drum corps and it is on TV, I'll sit and watch it.
snurrinhurr
Southwind's snare line has done that the past two years in their show
Blackstar
I didn't want to read any replies to the orginal post until I seen the video. If half the DCI lines were half as entertaining as these guys, the activity would be doing alot better. Did anyone hear the announcer at the end, 100 million peole will see these performers, live, TV and Video. compared to 100,000 will see DCI championships this year. They must be doing something right. Once again the drum corps high horse rears it's ugly head.

Also (if I'm not mistaken) this is a unit that is sanctioned by the swiss government and is comprised of older individuals. But it was very thoughtful of you use this thread as a segue to rip on DCI. <**> BTW, that was an awesome video.

Just curious, where are a million people going to see that?
bmvztx
One of our Cadences uses that effect, but they aren't very good so it doesn't work very well, someone always misses one. :P
