I was fortunate to march 9 years without ever wearing a shako.

They're just so 50's.

It makes sense for Cadets, because a shako is traditional "cadet" headgear (see westpoint). But, I still don't care for the look. For other corps it makes less sense and... well... it's a BOX on your head! <**>

Headgear I like includes aussies ala 27 or SCV, Bridgemen pimp hats (a great look for the time), and Blue Stars helmets (One of the reasons I joined!) Sorry, no PR or BC helmets. They're just too common. And enough with the feather boa plumes already! It's starting to look like a vegas revue.

My vote for most distinctive headgear of all time goes to the R.I. Matadors for their giant sombreros.

I second that

Where's DCP-user "argonaut" when you need him most! He'll readily tell you it's not headgear that determines the success of a corps, but the size of their plumage. This explains it all. The power of plumes compel you!

My contribution to DCP tonight will be a list I compiled a while back trying to (jokingly) convince a friend a corps' headgear is central to a corps' placement. Here's a list of corps' headgear and their placements:

There you have it! Numbers don't lie, and these clearly show that a good placement in DCI is nearly guaranteed by wearing helmets; likewise, a strong DCA-placement is insured by simply wearing no headgear at all. The end, no room for argument :P .

Oh, and for people who complain about the lack of aussies in DCI, consider aussie-wearing a privilege best reserved for when/if you go on to march DCA.

I'm still waiting for a corps to come out entirely in pope hats (mitres)! I think it'll look a little something like:

vatican2procession.jpg

Look, they even have a colorguard marching out in front of them.

If you're impatient waiting for some other corps to come out like that, you could always start your own with these simple pope-hat-making instructions.

I think certain uniform designs fit certain hat styles better. Some uniforms wouldn't look right with a shako. Others would just look bad with a helmet. It all depends to me.

and then you have combinations of the two... take for example Crown. Traditional shako, but the plume is off center, emulating an aussie. Or, take the crossmen; they use aussies, but have plumes instead of feathers, thus emulating shakos... where do you categorize these?

Maybe soon, there will be some cross-breed of shakos and aussies...shakaussies? :D

Besides tams, The Kilties have authentic regimental white Scottish helmets/with embroidered crest in their inventory, but don't wear them.

The tams are quite comfortable in all weather, don't hide the individual performer, and (of course) are a traditional piece of The Kilties uniform.
