In 87 I was marching with the scouts, and we were at retreat, and the announcement came up....

"In 5th place with a score of 34.8..........the Madison scouts"

No one got upset about the 45 point drop in score from the night before, we just kinda stared at eachother, and mumbled about how the show wasn't that bad. After about 10 seconds another announcement came in..

"Correction.......The Madison Jr.Scouts"

everyone got a little chuckel, and drum corps kept going.

hahahahahahahahahahaha

I remember getting a plastic cup from championships years ago that had all the corps listed on it but all the cities were all shuffled. The right cities for the wrong corps. None of them were right. I'm fairly certain that one was done on purpose as a joke or something. Wish I could still find that one.

I have an official show plastic cup from Cumberland MD in 96 that has the Sunrisers listed from Racine WI. I'm not sure if that was the year that Kilties were there, but they're not listed on the cup.

It's quite possible that that is the cup I am thinking of.

I've got one of those :)

Last summer at the South Milwaukee Spectacle or Music Show we were announced as "the Celties".

Hehe - this announcer really had a night - he had announced that I was the Drum Major  (of course John had played along with this and made a production out of this). Business Mgr/ drum major = almost the same????

The ever popular Santa Clara Vanguards

I think both Santa Clara and Des Plaines suffered from how the Miami Vanguards were named.

In the late '50s there was a highly touted, but poor performing, rocket produced for the Navy called the Vanguard. Although the missile was a dud, it brought national attention to Cape Canaveral. In so doing, the people who were re-organizing the Greater Miami Boys Drum & Bugle Corps decided that naming the corps after a missile would sound bad ### in a 50s sort of way and would make the corps recognizable as a Florida product.

At about the same time, the Skokie junior corps chose the name Vanguard, as in leader; in the forefront. And, of course, in 1967 along came the good folks from Santa Clara.

I know that the Des Plaines corps cringed at frequently having the "s" added to their name. I'm sure you guys in SCV were equally annoyed. Problem is that most everyone has gotten it right by now to the point of revising history and calling Miami the "Vanguard".

So if I apologize for all the irritation we caused Des Plaines and Santa Clara, can Miami have our "s" back?

I'm going to risk showing my age on this one.

Caballeros with an "l" sound, or the "Ca-ba-yeros" from an announcer trying to show he mastered Spanish One is one thing. We've heard it both ways for years, and I guess we're pretty much used to it either way. Occasionally, I have seen the Cabs' name in print as the "Hawthrone Caballeros," as well as the Cabelleros, andCaballaros (they were/are from Cleveland).

But the one that always got me was this: On the Fleetwood Records recording of the 1967 American Legion Nationals in Boston, we were listed on the back cover as the Hawthorne Crusaders. It was one thing to lose our title to a great Hurricanes' corps that year, but then we also had to endure the wrong name on the album, for all posterity. Didn't anyone proofread that before it went to the printer?

I think the Bucs have been from Topton, Fleetwood, and Laureldale ...

I never knew if they didn't see the READING in the title or if it was just the joke of someone to see if the announcers recognized it.

Also, the READing Buccaneers have been promoting children's literacy through pirate literature since 1958 :)

Funniest thing is our corps flag is actually spelled wrong. It says "Muchachoes". The flag was made back in the 60's. We looked into getting it corrected but it would have ruined the flag since it is embroidered on both sides. Next time you're at a parade we are at, come check it out.

An if that wasn't bad enough, we had hats made and had our website added to the hat. Only problem is they put .com instead of .net which is very bad since the .com is a porn site. Needless to say, we could not sell them but they did give us corrected hats with the right site
