idontwan2know
I don't know about the best ever, but they certainly deserve credit for the way they switch styles so often and so completely. The opening choir is some of the best lyrical playing EVER on a football field, then they swing as hard as BD ever has in Cool. Probably a tad too dirty to say they're the best ever, though. jwillis35
::falls off chair:: :o ...what? Jared, Maybe you ought to read the bottom of your posts. I guess 98 Cadets is someone's opinion. I also believe that was a very, very, very strong horn line. Look at what they played. Now, no, I am not calling it the best ever. The Cadets 2005 line was far better. But 1998 was outstanding. bluestarsmello
Star 92 is the best IMHO as well. 98 BD was a great line, but there are some TERRIBLE releases all over the place, but esp. in the opener. Not to get off subject, but the best release ever (IMO) is at the end of the opener in Suncoast 89. Dang!Michael Terry Yeah, that hornline (BD 98) had AMAZING tone quality and intonation, but their book was so exposed, and they just couldn't hack it on attacks and releases. Some of them straight up make me cringe. Star 92 . . . yes. Edited March 31, 2006 by bluestarsmello
Fran Haring
Blue Devils, many years. :P IMO, BD's 1998 "Romeo and Juliet Meets West Side Story" show was underrated. I really enjoyed that show! Fran

Some of them straight up make me cringe. IMO, the area of attacks and (especially) releases has always been an achilles heel for the Blue Devils hornline. And I use the term "achilles heel" loosely, because, let's face it, they've won more Ott trophies than anyone. But a bad release is still a bad release. And they really do cause me to cringe when I hear them, especially in contrast to all of the other amazing stuff they're doing. So out of place for a hornline of such high quality. Walter
From all the shows that I'VE heard and seen in DCI, by far my favorite hornline would be, 1991 Star of Indiana !!!! Now THAT'S, a powerful horn line !!! B)

Jonathan He was joking. I know who "Jake the Hydra" is, and I know his preferences in hornlines. Cadets '98 is very much not a hornline I would expect to hear him commend. I guess I can see how that would come across as unclear, so sorry for the confusion/lack of any kind of explanation. I'll keep my opinion of The Cadets' (of Bergen County) '98 brassline to myself for the most part, other than mentioning the fact that it was probably the worst brassline out of any championship corps. Good mellos though, and I'm well aware of the difficulty of the book and the fact that they were perpetually flying all over the field. Just listen to the midseason recording of that show though; there are some things you just can't disregard.

Fran I must be the only person in the world then that thinks that show was a flaming pile of crap? To me the show is totally unlistenable. I can't even get through the opener. Performance is halfway decent, but it's the show itself i can't stand. '99 was a HUGE recovery IMO, but it all went downhill again in 2000.
