question about domes

Recommended Posts

This is how I rate the domes:

1. Alamo Dome San Antonio- sight lines are great, the acoutics are very good. The concessions and souvies are easy to acsess.

2. Georgia Dome Atlanta- Good sight lines, good acoutics, The food at the concessions was different ( pulled chicken ,beef, and pork sandwiches) But very expensive $4.50 for a coke! $ 8.50 for a beer! I thought I was at a Strip Club!!!!

I could not find the souvies. Maybe I didn't look hard enough.

* DO NOT SIT IN THE TOP ROWS OF THE BOTTOM SECTION! YOU WILL GET HEAR ALL THE NOISE FROM THE CONCESSION STANDS. I WAS IN SECTION 117. IT WAS REALLY BAD.

3. RCA Dome Indy- The Best Sight Lines. The worst acoutics. The food is your typical stadium fare concessions are easy to get to. I try not to go to shows here.

Had this past weekend's show not been in the GA Dome, it would have had a much longer rain delay than we had. Apparently, the lightning started much earlier than the actual down pour and lasted much longer than the down pour. Meaning that it would have been a 1-2 hour delay. Also, the field would have just been nasty after that monsoon if it were real grass and outdoors.

Yeah, the accoustics aren't the best...but it wasn't as bad as I thought. I was happy to be in the Dome...and although those in Section 324 got wet, I can't imagine the chaos that would have insued had it been outdoor and that rainstorm hit.

Also, the Atlanta show drew about 16,000 people. There aren't many high schools that can hold that many on one side. So, that would leave college stadiums. There are very few colleges that have artificial turf. Those with natural grass aren't going to be so eager to let the grass get stomped on for a full day and turn brown right before the football season starts in a month.

Here's the answer: DCP Ear Amps. I wore my pair in the Georgia Dome and they do a GREAT job focusing the sound from straight ahead and cutting down any sound from above or to the sides. So many people said they were going to order a set when they were announced. For $15, I think you can't go wrong to try them.

Besides, it helps support DCP.

Since there is talk of holding major DCI events, including the DCI Championships, in a dome, do you think San Antonio will be considered to host the championships since the Alamodome seems to have the best facility at this point when considering acoustics and souviners? Is the new stadium in Indianapolis supposed to be good for acoustics?

My problem with attending DCI events is that generally there aren't enough concession stands open. I don't know whether or not DCI encourages the facilities to open enough places to sell food and drinks. I have yet to purchase any food or drink in Columbi, MO due to the long lines.

I keep reading reviews of shows in domes where people complain about the accosutics, and especially how narration isn't carrying well.

is it just some people that feel this way, or is it a shared impression by many fans in domes...and if so, given how this activity requires good accoustics, why do we keep having big shows in domes?

I was in the press box for the afternoon shows in both SA and Atlanta. I had no problems hearing the narration clearly from any corps. For the evening show in SA I was in the end zone, middle level and couldn't hear anything from a speaker. However that would be true in any venue. I thought the amount of echo was comparable in the two venues - enough to notice, not enough to distract.

I liked these two dome stadiums but wouldn't want finals at either one. RCA Dome in Indy is unacceptable just about anywhere in the stadium.

Georgia Dome has a concourse at the top of the 100 level. It was noisy on the concourse and I can imagine that the people in the top half had trouble hearing the show. Other venues are like this. I don't understand why they are built this way. Foxboro was like that too.

Georgia Dome was a more confusing facility on the outside. Corps parking was far away. It took me forever to find the corps entrance.

I've never seen a show in a dome. Certainly the weather is THE issue. I have spent considerable time in domes for sporting events, and teams from hot and cold climates need them to survive.

Can someone who's done both compare the acoustics of a domed football stadium to the open air minor leadue baseball fields frequently used in DCA?

The Georgia Dome was a disaster! It leaked! The noise level from the food vending areas was horrid! DCI officials, in Dome situations, ought to carry sign paddles that can be raised overhead when corps are performing that say "HUSH Y'ALL!!"

With all ther ambient noise, it was very difficult to hear the announcer. Also, some corps members said that the reverb made it difficult to really hear what was going on. Under normal circumstance I'd say a dome like the Georgia dome would be great, but the doggone thing isn't very sea worthy what with all the water in section 234 AND the annoying drip in section 116!

Oh, the food was awful too. Very expensive and very poor.
