LaSqueegee
Personally, I think those problems were a big reason you didn't see SCV in 4th... They were on pace for 4th that is for sure!!
MikeD
This one you have to blame on corps. The mic placement is the same every year. There's one on the 50, another stand roughly about 15 yards out on either side, and they're all about 50' up. If you "aim" your speakers at the mics, you'll get what you get. Sound amplitude is directional, and it needs to be diffused in some way to avoid that, if you insist on pointing towards the mics. I haven't heard the SCV finals recording...but I do remember them from the 1/4's broadcast...their pit was farther off the sideline than most...and it was arced around the conductor...which ended up placing their speakers much closer to the mics used for the broadcast....and caused a huge balance issue in the theater that was not the reality in live performance. Not sure if this is related or not. I am thinking that they create the staging and direction they think most suitable for their show to project up to the box...not whether the DVD or CD will sound good or not. Yeah, we wouldn't want DCI's bread and butter each year to come out sounding well, would we? :P ^0^ (Hey, I bought and suffered through 1995's "crash cymbal with drum corps" trainwreck...I'm entitled to a dig now and then.) They disctinctly changed their amps' vector on finals night. I'm sure they had feedback from theatergoers. Oh that's an awful pun... Also, considering how direct and overbearing the pit was live anyhow (though apparently not as bad as the cinecast), I thought it was an improvement all the way around. If they didn't use the amps, both would sound good. But who would want that? That's not education, is it? Drum corps is about creating a "suitable" product for the small handful of people in the box, isn't it?

Just MHO...but if your last sentence is accurate, I would bet that is more the reason for a change than the cinecast. Having the experience in the stadium in 1/4's and semis would probably guide them for finals (staff discussing their performances: "geez, did you hear how LOUD the pit sounded at 1/4's...we better fix that").
