Einstein On The Beach
Should everyone who composes symphonies write saxophone parts? Because... that would let more people play the symphonies. Saxophones can add a lot of texture to music that symphonies are lacking.... different ensembles have different instrumentation. It's as simple as that. Umm......what? Plenty of orchestral works have saxophone parts. There is no set or defined specification for what an orchestra is supposed to be, composers write for what they want. If Claude Debussy or George Gerswin want to write orchestra pieces with saxophones (which they did) then they are completely free to do so, and be successful doing it. Einstein On The Beach
Read what he said. I did, and I just saw a poorly worded statement that didn't really prove much of a point.

Einstein On The Beach
No . . . he mentioned symphonies, not orchestras. Okay, so we're debating semantics now? Okay.... He said "different ensembles have different instrumentation", basically implying that orchestras (which symphonies are written for, there are a minute amount that actually aren't) have a set instrumentation written in stone that no one should tamper with. That isn't right.

That isn't right. No, not semantics. We're both agreed that minute numbers and anomalies aren't included then since you disregarded symphonies not written for orchestra. In that case, I have to point out that there are a minute amount of symphonies that include saxes (most are written for the core orchestral instruments). So, while there are saxes in orchestras, they aren't scored in symphonies (other than minute amount where they actually are). So his wording was fine. OldBones
Why should they remain as-is? How about DCI starting a new division where any instrumentation is legal, a la MB? That way, if a few want to go that route...so be it. DCis new division? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y79bDM5UYws...ted&search=

Jeff Ream
Summer bands have been tried before. The concept failed. I don't understand why DCI insists that it must become something that failed from something that succeeds. even Vince McMahon finally learned with the XFL, as did Coke with new Coke
Jeff Ream
Yes Drum Corps has changed over the decades. But up until the addition of amps these changes have been modifying horns, percussion and guard work. Nothing has been added to the horn/drum/guard mix until amps. Sorry Mike, to say that adding WW is related to the changes over the decades (IMO) doesn't fit. thanks for repeating what many have said
