Old Geezer
This is just a question. It seems to me that there is one word that comes up in many threads here and it is "Dark". People seem to be very passionate when they use this word to describe shows. Can someone help me understand what about "Dark" is good ? This is truly a question. I am not trying to start trouble or complane. I am just one that enjoys "Uplifting".
mellos
Good question! I know when I look back at my favorite drum corps shows, there is a themematic element that ties them all together, Darkness. For example, Star 1993 Medea, BD 95 Carpe Nactum (sp?), parts of Phantom 2006, Faust. There are others, but my point is those shows that have a dark side to them tend to be more intense and driving. For me, that's exciting! So, "dark" equals exciting! Edited February 27, 2007 by mellos
raphael18
If you want Dark - look at Regiment 96. Driving, passionate, brooding. Shows described as dark also tend to have a heavy emphasis on the low brass voice, which I love (yeah, I'm biassed).

WWonka
I've always heard "dark" used in two ways around drum corps. I'm sure there are more but: Dark as in a lush dark sound. Kinda bottom heavy horn line sound. Dark as in angry. Angry music. See parts of Star 93 for the orginal angry music show. chris ncsu
I'd much rather be slapped around by baris and contras than by trumpets...hence, I tend to like a lot of Phantom shows, and put corps like BD to an extent Madison towards the bottom of what I typically enjoy. Blue-S2
Well the opinion will fluctuate from person to person on why they enjoy "dark" shows. In my personal one, i enjoy them because they portray things in life that are true. Nothing is covered up with bubbly lies, and frolicking leprechauns. Sure i enjoy happy shows too, but i think an overabundance of happiness gets corny sometimes. Dark shows and DCI seem to mix well also. With the power and volume at which the brass put out, the intensity and precision of the percussion, and aggressive emotion that the guard can convey... dark shows are made for drum corps. Besides, when you are walking through that tunnel on finals night, eyes shaded by your visor, things electric, do you think going onto the field with a concentrated sense of frivolity is going to render you the best results? I think not. When im in that moment, im ready to #### someones day up, and having a dark show to perform just intensifies that feeling even more. Anyhow maybe it's just the way I define "Dark" is where I am having trouble understanding. To me "Dark" means "Evil". chadwick
I think both Blue Knights and Phantom had good examples of 'dark' shows from this past season. That heavy, deep & low sound is what I think of when it comes to 'dark' shows. The opposite to me is the more fast, uplifting shows that project a different, brighter theme.
