KingJoeVII
While musical identities are more generalized these days (a corps in known for playing a style of music instead of maybe one particular chart), visually these holdovers are still around. How often have we seen Xmen make a Maltese Cross or The Cadets make a Garfield "G"? These trademark moves survive year in and year out mainly as hype for the corps and fans in attendance. How crazy did people go in '04 when Phantom ended in the "New world Symphony" Wedge? Also, the extra "encore" or the "warm-up" tunes that each corps plays have kind of taken the place of consistent music throughout different years shows. These charts remain as a kind of constant musical identity for the corps over time, so no matter what show they are playing, you can always hear your old favorites. some examples, just cause I know them well: "Russian Christmas Music" for the Crossmen and "Rocky Point Holiday" for The Cadets. arno0940
What was the last year that SCV played/performed the Bottle Dance from Fiddler on the Roof? I have down 72,73, 75, 78, 79, 82, 92 - I wonder if they'll bring it back anytime soon.
scottgordon
What was the last year that SCV played/performed the Bottle Dance from Fiddler on the Roof? Er, two nights ago?
Medeabrass
The decision for SCV to do Phantom of the Opera again in 1989 was set in stone in the DCI Board office the night before Finals in 1988--when it was determined Madison would be given the title a day ahead. SCV felt left out, so it was said, come back with the same show next year and we will give you a title too. :P Elmo Blatch I know you're being facetious but I'm affraid you might not be too far off. ....what's that sound?...ahh it's just the black helicopters again. The Cavies seem to do the same show every year :)
Slow Adam
Personally, I'm not sure what's the problem...these 2 shows are generally considered some of the best of all time. ANd, I would have never had a problem if the Cavies had done an encore presentation of Frameworks...and I get the feeling I'm not alone in that! I'd like to see Cavies bring back The Firebird with their current musical and visual program. I'm in the minority of people who actually liked 1997. Ummm...they did it in 1988 and 1976 as well, I believe.
jjeffeory
Back in the old days corps often repeated shows year after year. ??? By '88/'89 corps had mostly gotten away from that. They may repeat one song, but it wasn't as much as the early '80s. I think Santa Clara was the most guilty of doing that. In their defense, the had some good music, and the arrangements were always different. LOL, the old days... jjeffeory
Most of the tunes were the same. I don't remember any of the same drill moves off hand. The "surprise ending" wasn't really a surprise the second time around... :)Yeah, no kidding. I've poked fun at Boston for performing "Red" in 2000 and "Redder" in 2003, but, other than Bolero, the show was all new. The music was about 60% similiar. There were different arrangements of some of the same tunes, but in 1989 the middle portion of the shows was pretty different. The percussion feature music was VERY different. '89 was more in your face dark. '88 was "softer & prettier". There are a couple signature moves that were similiar between the two years. jjeffeory
Big change in technology to consider too. In the old days, before you could buy DVD's of last year's show, audiences WANTED to see popular moves/music that they liked the year(s) before, since seeing it reprised live was the only way to see the moment again. When Cavaliers repeated the stepover in "Softly..." in '81, it was a highly anticipated moment in the show because so many people liked it from the year before. The overfamiliarity that most of us have with recent shows nowadays would make that sort of repetition less effective. Huh, video tapes were being sold after each corps performances when I march back in the olden days. You probably don't remember 800 Video Express. In fact, they used to sell top 25 videos and individual corps videos for those corps that weren't in top 25. I'd like to see some of these shows today.
