CallipygianKing
Kalamazoo, MI - 2005 The hornline was heading to our warm-up spot before the show when a car drove by and the driver threw a half-full water bottle at us. It bounced off our baritone soloist's head.
Tom D'Bomb
I'd have to agree on that one.I was going through my insomniac phase during Rochester and decided (against my better judgement ) to take a walk at 4am. Needless to say, that was the most scared I had been in my life. Luckly I was on a main road with many lights. On behalf of all people who grew up in the neighborhood around Rochester's PAETEC Park, and anyone else who ever lived in a city of over 300,000 people, let me just say: Regarding your casual stroll through Rochester at 4am: Whaddayou, Nuts????!!!! A friend of mine from my old 'hood went for a walk at 4am in Tennessee --- haven't seen him since. penny96
The neighborhood they put the CapitolAires in at Jackson, MS for DCI 1994. Very bad area. Had to keep the gate to the school grounds locked at all times. It was really bad. Jackson - DCI '94They had to lock us into the school at night with chains and had a 24 hour security guard with a shotgun posted at the door. Didn't really sleep much that week Later, Mike Jackson was '93, I believe. And yes....it was BAD. I remember having a police escort into our (Bluecoats) Housing site and also the 24/7 security guard. Horn arc was always fun, as the local folks would come out, sit across the street with their 40 oz.'s, get smashed, and conduct our music for us. WOW is all I can say. Guess I am getting old!!! Another thing about '93 - the cops actually told the girls to practice wearing t-shirts (no tube tops, no bikini tops) as they were worried about what might happen!!!!! Man I hated Jackson!!!! Later, Mike
rockthebus09
Not exactly bad, but very humourous and kind of destracting. Allentown show warmup some little kids were standing on the bridge going "HEYYYYYYY HOOOOOOO HEYYYYYY HOOOOO" to which our brass caption head screamed "NOT NOW!!!!!" very funny. Didn't they spraypaint the field or something to cover up all the dead, ugly grass? I think we're in agreement. Jackson was a place I wanted to forget! Here's a big to DCI for picking that site. Northern Thunder
There was a good reason DCI didn't go back for the second season in Miami after having finals at the Orange Bowl in '83. Corps director attacked, horns damaged by thugs......
crest99
I wonder what the people in these neighborhoods thought of you... A fleet of large vehicles pulling up and making a heckuva lot of noise in the middle of the night, a gaggle of teenagers wandering around in search of a 7-11 at the witching hour...that would be enough to bring me out onto the porch and give you a dirty look. And then rehearsal on top of that. As some of the other posters have suggested, the labels applied here are comical. Walnut, for example, is one of the wealthiest areas in Southern California. And I doubt the SoCal corps would put up their guests in anything approaching an unsafe school. I've been to the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, and these places are not even in the same universe as that neighborhood, which could indeed use some TLC. My educated guess is that many/most corps members are white and come from affluent neighborhoods, usually in the suburbs. It's understandable that they might be a little unsettled by staying in an urban working-class neighborhood with lots of non-white folks. But just because it's not a perfectly manicured subdivision doesn't make it a bad spot or the people rough. Chris
mistofflies
I don't remember the name of the school, but last summer the place we stayed leading up to the San Antonio regional was definitely in semi-unsafe area. There was also an escaped convict on the loose so police helicopters were constantly passing overhead during rehearsal!
