cwillpayne Posted November 10, 2005 Posted November 10, 2005 (edited) So I am sitting her watching SCV 03 and since it was such a freakin sweet show, I have watched it from every angle imaginable and just recently started to check out the audio options. The percussion judge is great--especially during the drum break. But the thing that caught my attention was the show designer comments....i think it was Kee Pollen and Jim Cassella (i may be wrong) But at the portion of the show where the crowd yells "vanguard!" (which is a total hype) they said something to the effect of this: "nice flag toss here which was easier said than done" "ya and i remember how we set up that whole grand pause moment, uh, silence would have been a little more perfered there" "I think everybody thinks they're supposed to yell 'Vanguard' there...like we want them to do that which is..not necessarily the case" "Ya we were hoping for the contrast of silence to the big push moment" "It seems like we always end up with a moment in our show where that is part of the music and somehow its become this thing at DCI...ha ha ha" SO, were they being incredibly sarcastic? Or what is the deal? Do they 'inadvertantly' write it in? just a random thought....please, tear me to shreds for my lack of information. Edited November 10, 2005 by cwillpayne Quote
DaKman Posted November 10, 2005 Posted November 10, 2005 hey...i made both the 85 and 93 recordings i 85: during the timpani sforzdano leading into Midnight in Miami "it's no use!" 93: in the segue going into the percussion solo of Star of Indiana...the obnoxious vocal "Go Drums!" was me!!!! although, my playing has made the recordings (enmasse)...these are my only claims to fame on DCI recordings. PhantomR Posted November 10, 2005 Posted November 10, 2005 Listen to the Designer tape during the 2004 Vanguard show. You will notice that he says (right after the yell) he said something along the lines of: "And the infamous Vanguard yell, which we actually incorporated in the the show this year, so the audience feels like they can connect with the corps in a different way" Something along those lines. ~>conner Quote
kevingamin Posted November 10, 2005 Posted November 10, 2005 The "Vanguard Yell" has appeared during SCV shows as early as 1993. Quote

This is something that you are proud of? You are the person that we all love to hate... Yelling during a performance is simply RUDE. Quote
LaSqueegee Posted November 10, 2005 Posted November 10, 2005 It is in the 2002 finals recording as well!!! :) Quote
melloageout07 Posted November 10, 2005 Posted November 10, 2005 They didn't start to program the yell until the 2004 yell. It started to appear around 93 inconsistently then it started to appear more consistently during 98 or 99. and got loud around 2002. Quote

Glad you brought this up, because I've often wondered during the years whether the yell was planned or imposed. During this particular yell I remember wondering whether the moment would have improved without it. I'm guessing they're being honest. Not that they'd try to stop it. But it is cause for pause. Gbassman5 Posted November 10, 2005 Posted November 10, 2005 i'm sure they weren't being sarcastic, but the funny thing is, the center snare from my high school was the end snare closest to the tenors that year, and he showed us their family day video, and when it got to that part, he half jokingly yelled "vanguard!" and i can't remember if someone in the audience actually did or not. also, at the very first show that year, i distincly remember the Vanguard Cadets, who were sitting behind us, made sure they did the "Vanguard!!!!!" yell very loud at the "appropriate" time. DaKman Posted November 10, 2005 Posted November 10, 2005 (edited) This is something that you are proud of? You are the person that we all love to hate...Yelling during a performance is simply RUDE. not when you have a staff pass....NLP and "anchor" words that help "turn up the heat"....(im sharing my performance secrets with you....he he he)...other such "coaching calls", dont always make the recording...listen carefully and you will hear people like tom float, ralph hardimon, donny van doren, jim prime, thom aungst...any and all of the late 70's and early 80's spirit staff....so on, etc, etc, BTW: "take us to the beach suncoast" and "how sweet it is", in my opinion was a vital parts of the 85 recordings! this is all before AMPING (now that's rude!) in fact on the 84 recording of the dev's, you can hear....??? mehan or downey yell "***-hole" because of the soloist messing up the ###### and cadenza on "Latin Implosion" rude or not...many have made the recording. i will take this over AMPING (aka:dev's 2005) anyday!
