StuStu
Mergers do crazy things to corps. Just look at the famous 1979 semifinals leap of the Troopers. That came after the corps had been struggling with reduced numbers for a few seasons, then another corps folded prior to the start of the '79 tour and a big group of their members decided to head for Wyoming. That kind of situation also gave 27th Lancers a boost when I marched in '85 and '86. There were several former members of Pride of Cincinnati, Memphis Blues, Avant Garde and North Star. And I'm sure more that I can't recall. Alliance, maybe? Edited August 16, 2016 by StuStu

c mor
The Blue Devils didn't even play horns until 70 or 71. Before that, they were a drum and bell corps. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ni0Op0kTKjs Edited August 16, 2016 by c mor
candl
When The Academy won the DCI "Div. II" championship in 2006, I believe it was their first attempt. The Academy then moved to "Div. I" in 2007 and placed 13th; just missing Finals in their "first" year.

N.E. Brigand
Here are first-time finalists each year for both DCA and DCI. Note that in the early years, some corps who were well established might have opted not to participate in the new circuits. For DCA, I am including only the Open Class and not the Class A finalists (so no Govenaires . . . yet), even though DCA Finals since 1997 have included a set number of corps from both the former and latter divisions (usually ten and four, respectively) in the same event. Bold indicates a corps that has won a championship in the top division of DCI or DCA. (Thanks as ever to the Corps Reps website.) 1965 DCA: Reading Buccaneers, Connecticut Hurricanes, New York Skyliners, Yankee Rebels, Interstatesmen, Pittsburgh Rockets 1966 DCA: Long Island Sunrisers, Hawthorne Caballeros, Syracuse Brigadiers, Archer-Epler Musketeers, Princemen, Les Metropolitains 1967 DCA: Rochester Crusaders, Bonnie Scots 1968 DCA: Les Ambassadeurs, Hamburg Kingsmen 1969 DCA: none 1970 DCA: Boys of 76, Les Diplomates 1971 DCA: none 1972 DCA: Canadian Commanders, Rhode Island Matadors 1972 DCI: Anaheim Kingsmen, Blue Stars, Santa Clara Vanguard, 27th Lancers, Argonne Rebels, Troopers, Des Plaines Vanguard, Kilties, Cavaliers, Muchachos, Bridgemen, Bleu Raiders 1973 DCA: Erie Thunderbirds, Guelph Royalaires 1973 DCI: Madison Scouts, Black Knights, Commodores 1974 DCA: Hanover Lancers, Emmaus Sentinels 1974 DCI: DeLaSalle Oaklands, Blue Devils, Purple Lancers, Phantom Regiment 1975 DCA: Phoenix 1975 DCI: Oakland Crusaders (merger of previous finalist DeLaSalle Oaklands with Etobicoke Crusaders), Royal Crusaders, Garfield Cadets 1976 DCA: none 1976 DCI: Seneca Optimists, Freelancers, Guardsmen 1977 DCA: Westshoremen 1977 DCI: Crossmen 1978 DCA: none 1978 DCI: Spirit of Atlanta, Northstar 1979 DCA: Les Clique Allouette 1979 DCI: none 1980 DCA: none 1980 DCI: none 1981 DCA: Niagara Regionnaires 1981 DCI: none 1982 DCA: Bushwackers, L'Odysee 1982 DCI: Sky Ryders 1983 DCA: Steel City Ambassadors 1983 DCI: Suncoast Sound 1984 DCA: Les Cascadeurs 1984 DCI: Velvet Knights 1985 DCA: Empire Statesmen 1985 DCI: Star of Indiana 1986 DCA: Minnesota Brass, Inc. 1986 DCI: none 1987 DCA: none (Finals were rained out, I have counted only the top ten [of twenty-three] in Prelims) 1987 DCI: Bluecoats 1988 DCA: none 1988 DCI: none 1989 DCA: none 1989 DCI: none 1990 DCA: Les Metropolitains de Montreal (apparently not the same Metropolitains as in the 1960s) 1990 DCI: Dutch Boy 1991 DCA: none 1991 DCI: Blue Knights 1992 DCA: none 1992 DCI: none 1993 DCA: Capitol Brass Ensemble, Chieftains 1993 DCI: Glassmen, Colts 1994 DCA: none 1994 DCI: Magic of Orlando 1995 DCA: none 1995 DCI: Carolina Crown 1996 DCA: none 1996 DCI: none 1997 DCA: none 1997 DCI: none 1998 DCA: Kingston Grenadiers, Kilties 1998 DCI: none 1999 DCA: none1999 DCI: Boston Crusaders 2000 DCA: none 2000 DCI: none 2001 DCA: Yokohama Inspires, San Francisco Renegades, CorpsVets (later AtlantaCV) 2001 DCI: none 2002 DCA: none 2002 DCI: Seattle Cascades 2003 DCA: none 2003 DCI: none 2004 DCA: none 2004 DCI: none 2005 DCA: Carolina Gold 2005 DCI: none 2006 DCA: none 2006 DCI: none 2007 DCA: none 2007 DCI: none 2008 DCA: none 2008 DCI: none 2009 DCA: Alliance 2009 DCI: none 2010 DCA: Kidsgrove Scouts 2010 DCI: none 2011 DCA: Tampa Bay Thunder 2011 DCI: none 2012 DCA: Cadets2, Fusion Core 2012 DCI: none 2013 DCA: none 2013 DCI: none 2014 DCA: none 2014 DCI: none 2015 DCA: White Sabers 2015 DCI: none 2016 DCA: none . . . ? 2017 DCI: Academy Edited to fix Sky Ryders and Boston Crusaders.
