My personal opinion on DCA 2006

Recommended Posts

Repeat from my RAMD post - Problem with Scranton is the area's running out of hotel rooms Labor Day weekend. What happens when a new corps wants to debut at DCA Prelims and can't find freakin' rooms for the corps???? Any area interested in having DCA better have a lot of empty rooms LD weekend.

Between Winston-Salem, Kernersville, Greensboro (15-20 mins away down I-40) and High Point (15-20 mins away down US311) there are plenty of rooms out there...considering that Greensboro and High Point have no major sports or business function that weekend, there should be plenty for everyone.

Not to mention all the high schools available in the area for corps to use, if they choose to. :)

I agree that DCA should seek to expand it's fan base.

However, with about half the nation's population located in a 500 mile swath of the northeast corridor, I would think DCA would seek more of a sure thing attendance-wise in a city outside the northeast than is presently the case. (Just my humble opinion.)

Oh they got rooms, but who wants to pay $180 a night for 4 people in a room. We went a little further south and got double rooms for $65 for saturday.

Have I mentioned that I actually ate a buffalo burger while I was in NC?

I can get those in Madison at Dotty's!

Anyway..........now that the majority of the corps aren't from the NE, it's time to expand to other markets than the traditional ones for the championships...and right now, the area that deserves it is the south since they were the first DCA regional circuit as DCA-South. I don't think W-S or anyother town in North or South Carolina would be a problem for any corps to get to.

And then, in 2007...Whitewater!! B)

ok ~ DCA rooms used to be much more reasonable but for some reason this year in conjunction with the DCA's announcement of finals, many hotels in the area chose to do "special event pricing". this isn't the first time i've seen that done, but it is the first time i've ever seen it done for DCA. in the past the most i've paid for a room was $95 a night for a DCA finals. IMO the hotels are being greedy and doing this on their own. they know they have a captive audience, they know there is an event and they know people are going to book the rooms. i don't blame DCA on this but the various hotel chains that decided to go down that particular road. many of the same chains are in the W-S area, as well as the Syracuse area. makes me wonder if they will continue on this path for future DCAs. :(

I think you have indirectly hit on it here Jeff,...............Scranton has minimal local fans, similar to Syracuse and the other NE cities who have held finals in the past,..............but the key here is that they are in general striking distance to DCA's regional fan base,..............not that the fan base does not need expansion,.............but at what cost,.................I mean, how many people from NY, NJ, CT, PA, etc....................would opt not to attend finals?,.............

Well, for what it's worth, here's one fan's perspective.

I don't have a problem at all should DCA have finals in Winston-Salem next year.

Would I go? I really don't know right now.

I admit, I've been spoiled the past few years. In the years that I have been following and/or marching in DCA, the finals have been either in Allentown, Syracuse or Scranton. Allentown is an hour away from me. Scranton is two hours away, and Syracuse is about four hours away. The only time I ever had to get a hotel room is for Syracuse in 2001, and I had no trouble finding a cheap one.

What would keep me from going to Winston Salem is money, or lack thereof.

It's pretty much a day's drive. How much is gas going to be? How much would I have to pay for a room? How much for food? etc.

And if it's held someplace where I would have to fly to get there, I wouldn't go. Simple as that. I don't have that kind of money. Nothing personal about it, it's just the way it is.

Another thing to consider...it's been my observation, and I could be wrong, that the northeastern corps have more of the younger members (high school/college age) than corps from other parts of the country. Would these members be able to afford to travel that far of a distance for finals? I know when I was in college, there would be no way I could afford it. I know that it's tough for the adults in corps from other parts of the country to come out to the east. I think that it would be worse if you're younger.

Just my thoughts.

Ditto.  I'd love to hear your insights, Jeff.  Especially now that I'm becoming a DCA Borg (:P), and might actually PLAN AHEAD to make it to DCAs in '06.

my issues were well documented in the other thread, got me called stuck in the mud against growth and had some truly nasty email sent my way.

no need to repeat em here unless better insults and lies are sent my way
